Read more about The Castle Metaphor 👇

"One of the consequences of trauma is that it retunes the autonomic nervous system from calmness and spontaneous social engagement to defence, thus interfering with the ability to socially engage, communicate, and connect. It is as if, as a consequence of one or more threatening events, the individual finds themselves inside a castle (or fortified household) and erects their defences to limit external involvement. In this respect, the Polyvagal Theory (Porges, 2021) illustrates very effectively that one cannot force a condition of safety and consequently it may also be counterproductive to impose one’s own help. It would be like trying to scale castle fortifications or to breach them. This would either lead the individual to make their defence more exasperated or to surrender completely.

Instead, what works is to be present outside the castle walls, at a comfortable distance for the individual but easily reachable, ready to listen and be supportive in the satisfaction of basic needs. Our perception of safety is unconscious and requires to consistently pick up safety cues from the environment. Any intervention [in crisis contexts] should send safety messages that progressively stimulate the lowering of defences and encourage connection. Groundwork is the set of operations that makes it possible for people to regain a sense of safety and build a relationship of trust with the professional(s). At the same time, this groundwork is necessary for professionals to assess the context, needs and resources in order to co-construct a set of interconnected actions that can support individuals, families and communities.

Referring to the Castle Metaphor, a central element of the CPBF approach [Coping with the Present while Building for the Future (Cassina & Mochi, 2023)] is to create the conditions that allow the individual to step outside the castle walls, while outside the castle work is done to develop experiences and opportunities useful for improving their quality of life."

🔭 While walking through the Grand Canyon, we came across this viewing telescope. It indicates the direction to look, but it doesn’t magnify the image.

Similarly, in our work with parents, we can help them look in the right direction to (re)discover their children’s resources and strengths.

There is no need to amplify or overstate their abilities — because every child is remarkable and deserves to be valued for who they truly are ❤️
