Enjoying a walk in the forest with 5 extra kilos in tow for better health and longevity 🙂!

One of the primary benefits of wearing a weighted vest is maintaining bone density and strength. Plus, they make up for the fact that I cannot bring myself to do any running at the moment 🫣.

As we age, our bones can become weaker and more susceptible to fractures, especially in women during the in menopause experiencing a decline in estrogen levels. By adding extra weight to your body during weight-bearing exercises like walking or strength training, you create a greater impact force on your bones, stimulating them to grow stronger and denser. This may help to reduce the risk of osteoporotic fractures.

In addition to improving bone health, weighted vests can also enhance muscle strength and endurance. The added resistance the vest provides forces your muscles to work harder during exercises and other activities including household chores, leading to increased muscle activation and growth.

This is particularly helpful for women in the menopause transition, as they often experience age-related muscle loss, which can impact mobility, balance, and overall physical function.

Regularly doing squats and deadlifts come in handy when you need to load up tires 🛞 into your car for the bi-yearly swap - a requirement at our beautiful Switzerland 🇨🇭.

Strength training is all about enabling you to do functional tasks like this one. Of course there’s no shame in asking for help, but it feels pretty awesome to be able to (safely) do it on your own 💪.

Do you lift your own tires into your car?

When Diogo from .official first reached out asking whether I’d come to his podcast to talk about menopause I was beyond thrilled.

Let’s face it - menopause is still a ‘we don’t talk about Bruno’ kind of subject amongst females, let alone males.

Yet, here was someone’s son and partner, and no doubt a friend to many females, who wanted to have an open and candid conversation about menopause - what it meant; how it might impact relationships;
what men could be doing to better support the women in their lives during this transition period; and what challenges and opportunities from an overall health perspective, women may be presented with during this very normal transitional life period.

Sure I want to live in a world where this wouldn’t be a big deal, but for the moment at least, this is a pretty BIG freaking deal. We need more Diogos! We need more conversations about menopause!

And then excitement quickly turned into dread when he told me that the podcast would be done in German 🤣. My first instinct was to decline. Surely my German wasn’t good enough.

Following some reflection, and many self-deprecating jokes about my German language abilities … I went for it. Getting out of our comfort zone is never easy, it takes practice. It takes getting comfortable with feeling vulnerable, and not being ‘perfect’. I struggle at it. But I am also constantly working on it.

In my assessment, the opportunity to talk about a subject that’s still so often overlooked outweighed my fear of not being good enough.

Here it is, and I am damn proud. Have a listen (if you understand German 🙃) and let me know what you think. Let’s keep the conversation going!

I hadn’t realized how much my body had craved stillness until I was actually still.

Allowing myself to do nothing, also when on holiday, always feels incredibly hard. I’m pretty much a ‘go hard or go home’ kind of person 😂, but as I get older, I find myself appreciating the value of doing nothing more and more.

It turns out that doing nothing, or being still, is very important indeed. Research backs up the notion that when we allow ourselves time to do nothing, we give our brain a chance to process experiences, consolidate memories, and reinforce learning.

Our resting state is a powerful tool for regulating our emotions and maintaining the ability to focus. Rest will also help us make better decisions and be more productive. Downtime benefits our creativity too, as letting our brain rest can trigger more imaginative thoughts and ideas.

I don’t know about you, but I am sold 😜, and committed to adopting the habit of doing nothing for just a little bit each day…

When was the last time you did NOTHING ☺️?

🤯 If we’re not challenging our muscles, we’re losing them!

After 30, women lose 3-8% of muscle mass every decade—and the rate speeds up during menopause due to declining estrogen. This loss impacts daily functions like walking, lifting, and even getting up after a fall.

💪 Strength training is the BEST way to maintain or build muscle, strength, and bone mass.

Start now—stay strong for life!
