Sankalpa

At the beginning of a new year, many of us feel the urge to set an intention. In yoga, this intention is called a sankalpa.
A sankalpa is not a resolution or a promise to do better. It is a clear, heartfelt intention — something you can return to throughout the year. It works gently and over time. In yoga philosophy, a sankalpa is said to settle in the subconscious, where it can support real and lasting inner change.

Finding your sankalpa

To find your own sankalpa, start by getting comfortable. Sit upright or lie down on your bed or yoga mat. Let your breath slow down and allow your body to soften.

Then ask yourself, without trying to find the “right” answer:
What do I need right now?

Give the question some space. Often, what comes up is simple and honest.

A sankalpa is always phrased in the present tense, as if it is already true. It often begins with “I am …”
Examples might be:
* I am calm and grounded.
* I trust myself.
* I am safe.

Choose words that feel steady and believable — not perfect, just true. You can return to your sankalpa whenever you need it. This might be during meditation, while walking through a park, sitting on a bench, or waiting in line at the supermarket. Repeat it silently to yourself three times, with attention.

If working with a sankalpa feels new, you’re welcome to explore it with me in a one-to-one yoga session. We can take the time to find an intention that feels right for you and supports you beyond the mat.

The Metal Element - Going inwards

As nature slowly retreats, so should we. The trees drop their leaves to store energy for the cold season, the swallows fly south, and other animals slowly build their shelters for the barren winter season.

This is also a time to focus on letting go. Something has to be let go so that something new can emerge. At the same time, it is also the time in which we can fall back on the supplies that we have acquired during the year - for this, a turning inwards and listening in is necessary.

The two organs associated with the metal element are the lungs and the large intestine. The lung is the barrier
