Vascular adaptations to perinatal hypoxia and oxidative stress. Our Laboratory (Laboratory of Vascular Function and Reactivity) is interested in the effects of acute and chronic hypoxia and oxidative stress during gestation. Specifically, we are focused in the cardiovascular effects on the fetus, neonate and adult (immediate, short and long-lasting effects) and the determinant adaptive mechanisms.
Our ongoing experimental models study pathologies associated with cardiac and vascular dysfunctions such as neonatal pulmonary hypertension, adult systemic hypertension and pre-eclampsia. In addition, we are assessing potential therapeutic interventions with antioxidants, vasodilators and anti-remodeling agents to treat vascular dysfunction. Our research involves an integrative approach with systemic (in vivo), isolated organs-tissues (ex vivo), and cellular and molecular (in vitro) methodologies.
