Manguito Rotador. Te has lesionado?

Groundbreaking research in neurocardiology is transforming how we understand the connection between the heart and the brain. Scientists have discovered that the heart contains its own intrinsic nervous system, featuring more than 40,000 specialised neurons, a number that exceeds the brainpower of some animals.

This network, often called the "heart brain," communicates directly with the central nervous system through the vagus nerve. Incredibly, about 80% of the nerve’s traffic flows from the heart to the brain, not the other way around. This means your heart is constantly sending emotional and sensory data that directly influences your thoughts, mood, and decision-making.

Studies show that the heart processes information independently, which helps explain why "gut feelings" or intuitive hunches often turn out to be accurate. These are not just emotional reactions, but real neurological events driven by the heart’s rapid assessment of situations before the brain fully responds.

This discovery challenges the long-held belief that the brain is always the primary command center. Instead, it suggests a powerful two-way communication system, where the heart plays a leading role in perception, emotion, and behaviour.

Your heart isn’t just pumping blood, it’s helping guide your choices.

A new study offers powerful evidence that physical activity may do more than boost fitness, it could also protect your brain from Alzheimer’s disease. Scientists have discovered that exercise triggers key changes in brain cells, strengthening the brain’s defences against the damage that causes memory loss and cognitive decline.

The research focused on the hippocampus, the part of the brain responsible for memory. In mouse models of Alzheimer’s, researchers found that exercise improved the function of brain-supporting cells called microglia and neurovascular-associated astrocytes (NVAs). These cells help guard blood vessels in the brain and clear away damaged tissue. With regular activity, these protective cells became more efficient by switching on genes that enhance their defence mechanisms.

The study also highlighted the role of an energy-regulating gene known as ATPIF1. This gene was shown to support neurogenesis, the brain’s ability to grow new neurons. Since producing new brain cells is critical to maintaining memory and learning, this finding may explain how exercise helps keep the brain sharp.

While there is still no cure for Alzheimer’s, these discoveries add to a growing body of evidence that staying physically active could delay or even reduce the impact of the disease.

La lectura proporciona salud!!

According to a 2009 study by Mindlab International at the University of Sussex, reading for just six minutes can reduce stress levels by up to 68 percent. This surprising benefit was found to be more effective than other common relaxation techniques, including listening to music, drinking tea or coffee, and going for a walk. The researchers explained that reading allows the mind to disconnect from everyday stressors and engage in a state of focused calm. As the brain shifts away from anxious thoughts, heart rate slows, muscles relax, and the nervous system begins to stabilize.

The study, led by cognitive neuropsychologist Dr. David Lewis, found that it didn’t matter what genre someone chose to read, as long as the material was immersive. Fiction, nonfiction, fantasy, and even magazine articles could all provide the same stress-relieving effect, as long as the reader became fully absorbed in the conatent. According to Dr. Lewis, “losing yourself in a book is the ultimate relaxation,” offering a mental escape that works faster than many traditional stress-management approaches. This research highlights the power of small habits in supporting mental well-being

Physical Activity Enhances Brain Cell Growth, Potentially Erasing Harmful Memories
Scientists at Kyushu University and the University of Toronto discovered that promoting new brain cell development in the hippocampus can diminish or eliminate fear-based and substance-related memories in laboratory mice. Through both physical exercise and genetic manipulation, researchers increased neuron production, which reduced trauma-like behaviors in mice exposed to electrical stimulation and decreased preference for cocaine-associated environments in addiction studies.
Physical training demonstrated superior results compared to genetic approaches, substantially reducing anxiety and fear-based reactions. The 2025 research indicates that regular exercise might serve as an effective, medication-free strategy for treating trauma and addiction disorders in people by modifying how memories are formed and stored through the creation of new brain cells.
This breakthrough suggests that consistent physical activity could revolutionize treatment approaches for individuals struggling with PTSD and substance dependency by naturally rewiring problematic memory pathways in the brain.

A drug widely used to treat nerve pain has been linked with dementia and cognitive impairment.

A new study analyzing over 26,000 patient records has found a significant link between long-term gabapentin use and increased risk of both dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI).

Patients with six or more prescriptions were 29% more likely to be diagnosed with dementia and 85% more likely to develop MCI within a decade.

The risk was even greater among adults aged 35 to 49, prompting researchers to urge physicians to monitor cognitive health in patients using the drug long-term.

Gabapentin, marketed under names like Neurontin, has grown in popularity as a less addictive alternative to opioids. However, its mechanism—dampening communication between neurons—may also disrupt critical brain connections, potentially contributing to cognitive decline.

While past research has been inconclusive, this new study’s large sample size offers more weight to the growing concerns. Researchers stress the importance of further investigation to determine whether gabapentin plays a causal role in dementia development or simply correlates with other risk factors in chronic pain patients.
