Watch out, Important Polio Information

1) What Is Poliomyelitis?
It is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus called _Poliovirus_ and transmitted through the consumption of contaminated water or food. Poliovirus mainly attacks the limbs, weakening them and paralyzing them for the rest of life.

2) Why This Vaccination Campaign In Response To The Poliomyelitis Epidemic?
Although Cameron was declared in 2020, the country is currently experiencing several Polio outbreaks caused by variant poliovirus.
Recently two new cases were detected in the Batouri and Ndelele health districts in the East Region. This Variant Poliovirus is also spreading in other neighboring countries within the Lake Chad Basin and Sahel. This situation represents a public health threat and requires a ripost emergency, thence the need for a synchronized response campaign with the neighboring Nigeria.
_The goal is therefore to boost the immunity of the target age (children below 5) against the variant poliovirus and curb it's spread._

3) What Interventions Are Expected To Be Carried Out?
- 100% Vaccination of children under 5 years against Poliomyelitis;
- Catch-up routine immunization for missed out children of 0 - 5 months;
- Birth registration of children between 0 - 90 days in the Ngoumou health district, Centre Région.

*In prelude to the National Vaccination Days to run from the 24-27, Media men in the West Region have been briefed on the relevance of Polio Free community. Member State of The Sahel and Lake Chad Basin including Nigeria, Chad, Niger, RCA and Cameroon will all be synchronized during the ripost. The hall of The Regional Fund For The Promotion of Health played host to this important meeting.*

20 Publishers of online media in the West Region have been briefed on the mass sensitization with respect to the first round of the Anti-Polio Vaccination Campaign to run from October 24 - 27th 2024 in order to definitely eradicate Poliomyelitis from Cameroon. Children between 0 and 5 years old will each be administered 2 drops of the antipolio vaccine in their mouth. The Anti-Polio vaccination campaign is organized by the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin member States including Nigeria, Chad, Niger RCA and Cameroon to reinforce a collective immunity as against Polio in children below 5 within the Subregion.
Talking the 20 online media publishers in the West Region, the representative of WHO Dr. Kouamen Gael emphasized the need to make sure that at least 95% of the target population (children between 0 and 5) receive the relevant information. She used this opportunity to call on all the households in the West Region to reserve a warm welcome to vaccination teams deployed on the field; be it at the health centers, homes, schools, churches or mosques.
Dr Kouamen Gael was accompanied by Pascal Adouabou of UNICEF, and Marcel Avenec of the Central EPI program, partners of the Ministry of Public Health.
