Golden Blood: The World’s Rarest Blood Type

Among the 8 billion people on Earth, only about 43 are known to have it. Rh-null, often called “golden blood,” is the rarest blood type on the planet—and also one of the most dangerous. Unlike typical blood types that are defined by the presence of Rh antigens, Rh-null blood lacks all 61 of them. This makes it universally valuable for rare Rh patients, but nearly impossible to replace in an emergency.

First discovered in 1961 in an Australian woman, Rh-null blood has puzzled and fascinated scientists. It’s a genetic anomaly so rare that fewer than 10 people are active donors today. For those who have it, life is a delicate balance. They can only receive blood from other Rh-null individuals, meaning even a minor accident can turn life-threatening.

Without Rh antigens, red blood cells become fragile, breaking down more easily and leading to anemia. These patients often suffer from fatigue, weakness, and other symptoms due to rapid cell loss. And because the condition can’t be predicted or screened for easily, many people only discover it during a medical emergency.

Yet, golden blood is incredibly valuable. It can save the lives of others with rare blood conditions. Global registries carefully track donors, ensuring emergency transport when needed. In the world of medicine, these individuals are both at risk—and a lifeline

Safe abortions should be when keeping a pregnancy endangers the woman.

Evidence shows that restricting access to safe abortions does not stop abortions, but it does drive women and girls towards unsafe procedures.

🔴 Unsafe abortions result in millions of hospitalizations each year, bringing major health risks.

This makes the blood compatible with almost everyone.

To achieve this, the scientists used enzymes obtained from bacteria present in the human gut to eliminate antigens from AB, A, and B blood, transforming it into type O.

This method has the potential to address the persistent shortage of blood globally. By using metagenomics, the team was able to separate bacterial genomes from the gut and test thousands of enzymes against A and B antigens.

The researchers identified an enzyme that could remove A antigens from red blood cells and combined it with another enzyme that removes B antigens, offering a way to convert AB, A, and B blood into type O. Nonetheless, the team needs to examine the converted blood in a living organism as unforeseen issues may arise. O negative blood type is relatively rare compared to the other blood types. It is only present in 1 out of 15 individuals.

People with such blood groups can donate blood to anyone with any blood type. Receiving blood from the wrong ABO group can trigger an immune response.

World AIDS Day is on 1 December 2024.

🙌🏽 This year, WHO calls on everyone to take action to stop the unfair barriers that make it harder to end AIDS.

Over 39.9 million people live with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) worldwide. AIDS occurs at the most advanced stage of this infection. While there’s no cure, HIV can be prevented and treated.

Reduce the risk of HIV by:

🛡️ Using condoms during s*x
🩸 Being tested for HIV and other infections
✂️ Choosing medical male circumcision
💉 Getting safe help if you use drugs

Your healthcare workers may suggest additional medicines (PrEP) to help prevent HIV.

💪 By protecting everyone’s right to health and bringing down new infections, we can achieve an AIDS-free generation and ensure the sustainability of the HIV response.
