Pink October Breast Cancer Awareness Day at the Catholic University of Bamenda

On October 25, I had the privilege of co-organising and actively participating in the Pink October Breast Cancer Awareness Day at the Catholic University of Bamenda, in commemoration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The event focused on raising awareness about breast cancer, with strong emphasis on early detection, regular screening, and breast self-examination. Through health talks, interactive discussions, and student engagement activities, we addressed common myths, reduced stigma, and empowered participants with accurate, life-saving information.

For more than two years, I have remained deeply committed to the fight against breast cancer, actively engaging in awareness campaigns, sensitization programs, and community health education initiatives. Co-organising this event was a continuation of my ongoing efforts to promote preventive healthcare and encourage timely health-seeking behaviour.

The program brought together students, health advocates, and members of the university community in a unified effort to advance women’s health and public health advocacy. It further reinforced the critical role of young health professionals and medical students in driving sustainable health education within academic and community settings.

This experience reaffirmed my dedication to breast cancer awareness, early diagnosis, and public health action as key strategies to reduce breast cancer–related morbidity and mortality.

Did you know that while exercise isn't a direct cure for hepatitis, it can play a powerful role in managing and preventing complications, especially in chronic cases?

Regular physical activity offers a wide range of health benefits that indirectly support liver health. In fact, exercise has been shown to improve liver function, reduce fat buildup in the liver, and enhance overall metabolic health all of which are crucial when dealing with hepatitis and its related conditions.

How Physical Activity Helps with Hepatitis:

✅ Improved Liver Function
Exercise is especially helpful in managing fatty liver diseases such as MASLD (Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease) and NAFLD (Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease), both of which are commonly associated with hepatitis.

✅ Reduced Liver Fat
Engaging in regular physical activity helps reduce the accumulation of fat in the liver, lowering the risk of progression to more serious liver conditions.

✅ Better Metabolic Health
Physical activity boosts metabolism, particularly glucose and lipid metabolism, which helps maintain liver health and supports weight management.

✅ Reduced Inflammation
Chronic inflammation is a key factor in liver damage. Exercise has anti-inflammatory effects that benefit not just the liver, but the entire body.

✅ Improved Insulin Sensitivity
Insulin resistance is often linked to liver disease. Regular exercise can improve insulin sensitivity, thereby lowering risks of progression to cirrhosis or liver failure.

✅ Enhanced Quality of Life
For those living with chronic hepatitis, physical activity can combat fatigue, improve mood, reduce anxiety, and enhance physical function, contributing to a better quality of life.

Recommendations for Physical Activity:

🕒 Minimum of 3 hours per week:
Health experts recommend at least three hours of moderate-intensity physical activity weekly. This could include walking, cycling , or even dancing.

📈 Start Gradually:
Begin with light to moderate exercises and increase intensity and duration as your body adapts.

🚶‍♂️ Make it a Habit:
Incorporate movement into your daily life take the stairs, walk short distances, stretch often, and engage in fun, active hobbies.

Important Considerations:

⚠️ Acute Hepatitis:
If you're in the acute phase of hepatitis (sudden onset), rest is essential. Avoid physical exertion until cleared by your doctor.

👥 Individualized Approach:
There is no one-size-fits-all. Exercise plans should be adapted based on age, symptoms, stage of the disease, and overall fitness level.

🧠 Listen to Your Body:
Fatigue and discomfort are warning signs. Respect your limits and avoid pushing too hard.

Bottom Line:
Exercise isn't just about physical fitness it’s a powerful tool in the long-term management of chronic hepatitis. By staying active, individuals can reduce liver-related complications, improve daily functioning, and take an empowered role in their health journey.

Causes of Liver Failure

Liver failure is a life-threatening condition that occurs when the liver loses its ability to function adequately. It may result from acute or chronic liver injury, and its etiology can vary significantly based on geographic, environmental, genetic, and behavioral factors. The major causes include:

1. Chronic Alcohol Use: Long-term alcohol abuse is one of the most common causes of liver failure, leading to alcoholic liver disease, cirrhosis, and ultimately hepatic decompensation.

2. Viral Hepatitis (Hepatitis B and C): These viral infections cause progressive inflammation and destruction of liver tissue, which can lead to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, both precursors to liver failure.

3. Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD): Often associated with metabolic syndrome, obesity, and diabetes, NAFLD can progress to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and cirrhosis.

4. Autoimmune Hepatitis: This occurs when the immune system attacks liver cells, causing chronic inflammation and damage that may culminate in liver failure if untreated.

5. Genetic Disorders: Conditions such as Wilson’s disease (copper accumulation) and hemochromatosis (iron overload) can lead to chronic liver damage and failure.

6. Certain Medications and Toxins: Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) from medications like acetaminophen (paracetamol), antituberculosis drugs, or herbal supplements is a leading cause of acute liver failure. Exposure to industrial toxins or poisonous substances such as Amanita phalloides (death cap mushroom) can also rapidly damage the liver.

Prompt diagnosis and intervention are essential in preventing the progression of liver injury to failure. Liver transplantation remains the definitive treatment for end-stage liver disease.

Empowering Change Through Education: Tackling GBV and FGM

The fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM) is more urgent than ever, and education remains our most powerful tool. As advocates, we have a responsibility to equip the younger generation with the knowledge and confidence to challenge these harmful practices.

Our recent sensitization campaign reinforced the fact that education is not just about academics—it is about empowerment, awareness, and breaking cycles of violence. By engaging young minds in conversations about human rights, respect, and gender equality, we are laying the foundation for a future where every girl can grow up safe, free, and with dignity.

This work aligns closely with two key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

SDG 5: Gender Equality – By addressing violence and harmful practices, we contribute to eliminating discrimination and ensuring a safer world for women and girls.

SDG 4: Quality Education – By incorporating human rights education into our outreach, we empower young people with the knowledge and skills needed to promote equality, challenge harmful norms, and drive sustainable change.

The enthusiasm and engagement of the students during our campaign prove that change begins with awareness. Some were so inspired that they wanted to take our educational materials home—a sign that knowledge is spreading beyond the walls of the classroom.

Together, we must continue to raise our voices, break the silence, and create a culture of respect, dignity, and human rights. The community needs us now more than ever, and we must answer the call.
