🟢 IELTS speaking practice mini-session

What's the best way to do IELTS speaking practice? Here's my three-step method.

'Video games' is one of the current IELTS speaking topics. So, there's a pretty good chance that during your IELTS speaking test you will get asked the following question: Would you watch others play video games? Let me demonstrate how I would approach this question.

Step 1: Test yourself
Answer the following speaking question without referring to the IELTS Speaking Assistant app or any other study materials. Please record your response. You will use it later to compare your 'before' and 'after' answers.

Question: Would you watch others play video games?
(IELTS Speaking Assistant app, part 1, topic 17, Video games)

Step 2: Improve your answer
Read and translate all the unfamiliar words. Please read the answer repeatedly until you're able to retell the story closely to the text. Visualize the information as a mental mind map, but refrain from memorizing it. After you've followed the instructions to read, retell, and visualize, you feel confident and comfortable enough with the content to answer the question again accurately, answer the question again.

IDEAS:
I watch gameplays:
🟢when I'm interested in a game but don't have the chance to play it myself
🟢if it's a game I'm interested in, but don't have the opportunity to play myself
🟢if I’m too tired to play games myself
🟢when I'm stuck or can't beat a boss
🟢if I'm completely stuck, and even then, I only watch the least amount possible to avoid spoiling the rest of the game

I watch gameplays because:
🟢it’s quite relaxing to watch a stream sometimes
🟢they help me decide if I would like to play it for myself
🟢they really help me figure out what to do and get past tough parts
🟢they help me learn those little things I didn’t know the game could do
🟢it's really interesting to see how good someone can get if they practice a game a lot

Watching gameplays can be interesting:
🟢if a person playing a game is charismatic, funny, or knowledgeable enough to make it enjoyable

MODEL ANSWERS:
Would you watch others play video games?
🦀Yes. I usually watch video game walkthroughs when I'm stuck or can't beat a boss. They really help me figure out what to do and get past tough parts.

🦀I would only watch gameplay if I were completely stuck, and even then, I’d watch the least amount possible to avoid spoiling the rest of the game.

🦀Yeah, I would watch others play video games, especially walkthroughs. It's often when I'm interested in a game but don't have the chance to play it myself. Watching helps me decide if it's worth investing in since games typically cost around 50 dollars. I don't want to waste my money on something I might not enjoy.

🦀I would, because I'm not much of a gamer myself. I'm not very skilled, so it's really interesting to see how good someone can get if they practice a game a lot.

🦀Yeah. Watching someone play a game with running commentary can be interesting if the person is charismatic, funny, or knowledgeable enough to make it enjoyable.

Step 3: Test yourself again
Record your improved answer. Compare the two recordings. Is the second recording better? If it is, move on to the next question. If it's not, take step 2 again.

🤪 Stop using ChatGPT blindly

Some IELTS test takers use ChatGPT to generate sample answers without analyzing their quality. However, there's a catch. While ChatGPT is a great tool for checking grammar mistakes and generating ideas, the sample answers it produces are often convoluted and unnatural. Please compare the following answers.

Question: Have you ever used AI tools?

🟢Model answer: I've been using several AI-related tools since their launch. For example, I often use Gamma. It’s an AI tool that makes presentations for you. This Gamma app made my work so much easier. I create presentations all the time. I used to spend a lot of time and sometimes money on creating decent ones. Now I get things done a lot faster. All I need to do is finalize a presentation and make some edits.

This is a sample answer produced by ChatGPT (I asked ChatGPT to improve my sample answer and make it sound even more natural 🙂

Question: Have you ever used AI tools?

🔵Model answer: Since their launch, I've been utilizing various AI-related tools, with one standout being Gamma. This powerful AI tool streamlines the presentation-making process, significantly easing my workload. As someone who frequently creates presentations, Gamma has been a game-changer. Gone are the days of spending endless hours and sometimes money on crafting decent presentations. Now, thanks to Gamma, I complete tasks more efficiently. All I need to do is finalize a presentation and make some edits, saving valuable time and resources.

The sample answer above sounds pompous. People don't speak like that in everyday life. So be careful when using AI to prepare for your IELTS speaking test. There are still many occasions when it's better to rely on human tutors rather than trust AI.
