🎗️ Answering the Call: From Research to Action 🎗️

The National Blood Transfusion Service is participating in the Scientific Days of the National Committee for the Fight against AIDS. This year's theme is "Triple Elimination of HIV, Syphilis, and Hepatitis B: From Research to Action to Control the Epidemic."
This mission is at the very heart of what we do, ensuring a safe blood supply is a critical, actionable step in breaking the chain of transmission for these infections.
The journey from research to real-world impact depends on collaboration. We stand with researchers, healthcare workers, policymakers, and communities to turn scientific knowledge into tangible protection for every citizen.
👉 Your Role is Vital! Becoming a regular, safe blood donor is more than a gift of life, it's an act of solidarity that strengthens our national health architecture and supports this elimination goal.

A Productive PADOC Project Review with Initiative

We were delighted to host a delegation from our French funding partner, Initiative, for a productive working session with the NBTS Top Management. The meeting was aimed at reviewing the Project to Support the Deployment of the National Blood Transfusion Service of Cameroon (PADOC).

We were honoured to receive
🔹Sabrina Regent, Project Officer for the Initiative
🔹Eric Fleutelot, Technical Director for the Initiative
🔹Pauline Lavrotte, Central Africa Geographic Manager for the Initiative
🔹Prof. Christophe Vanneck and
🔹Florianne Zacoumer

The session began with a comprehensive presentation on the project's progress, followed by in-depth discussions. We were pleased to see that the team from Initiative was visibly satisfied with the level of information sharing and the achievements made so far.
We look forward to continuing our strong partnership to ensure the success of the PADOC project and enhance blood safety for all Cameroonians.
Funded by Expertise France, the project's overall goal is to reduce the risks of transfusion-transmissible infections like HIV and malaria by focusing on two key areas:

1. Strengthening the technical capacities of the NBTS and Hospital Blood Banks.
2. Equipping civil society organizations to better mobilize communities for blood donation. The ultimate aim is to improve the quality and availability of safe blood products across the country.

National Hematology Days
The second edition has opened in Yaounde under the theme "Blood safety in Cameroon". Organised by the Cameroon Society of Hematology, SOCAHEMA in collaboration with the National Blood Transfusion Service,NBTS, the three -day event brings together experts in the field, researchers and students in a bid to brainstorm on ameliorating transfusion safety in Cameroon.
During an inaugural lesson delivered by Prof. Tayou, head of the Medico-technical Department of the NBTS, he mentioned that such challenges as leadership, education of the population on blood donation, prevalence of certain pathologies, lack of resources and little or no respect of regulations hampered transfusion safety. To Mrs. Ze Kakanou Florence, Technical Adviser and Representative of the Minister of Public Health, "the conference should help open up new perspective in in the field of hemovigilance, strengthen bridges between research and clinical practice, medical biology and innovative blood safety strategies". She further encouraged participants at the conference to produce more local data and to raise Cameroonian research to international standards. Prof. Dora Mbanya, General Manager of the NBTS and also President of SOCAHEMA, said with The NBTS having the mandate to ensure safe blood nationwide, it has been involved with SOCAHEMA in a bid to fine-tune strategies to promote safe blood in the country. Present at the opening ceremony was Prof. Tetanye Ekoe, President of the Management Committee of the NBTS, and also the representative of WHO.

NBTS Advances National Blood Transfusion Guide

The first draft reviewed at a three -day workshop in Mbankomo, Centre Region, has set the stage for a broader stakeholder endorsement.
Concluded on 31 October 2025, NBTS technical experts examined the draft of the National Guide of Good Transfusion Practices under the watchful eyes of Prof. Dora Mbanya, General Manager of the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS). The workshop brought together the medico‑technical services of the NBTS and heads of other strategic Departments to review the first draft of the National Guide of Good Transfusion Practices, a key document aimed at standardising blood‑handling procedures across Cameroon.
Participants conducted a detailed line‑by‑line review, identified gaps, and agreed on a set of revisions. At the close of the workshop, it was decided that the revised draft would be forwarded to the Minister of Public Health who would subsequently organise a conclusive workshop that will include additional partners—such as health‑care providers, and international collaborators to validate the guide formally.
This collaborative effort underscores the NBTS’s drive to enhancing the safety and quality of blood transfusion services nationwide. The guide will support health‑care professionals in delivering reliable transfusion care, ultimately saving more lives.

NBTS Conducts Successful Blood Drive at FOBANG INSTITUTE

The two-phase campaign at FOBANG Institute started with a sensitisation session leading up to a full-scale blood collection.
The blood drive took place on 12 November 2025 at the FOBANG INSTITUTE in Yaounde. In all, 31 donor candidates showed up and 24 blood bags were collected thanks to the dedication of NBTS staff and the support of the Central Hospital team. Six candidates were deferred, five due to low haemoglobin levels and one because they were on antibiotics. The team also handled an unexpected situation efficiently. One student experienced a shock after donating but the hospital team provided prompt care and the donor was stabilised.
Worthy of note is the fact that the student population at FOBANG INSTITUTE readily welcomed the idea of donating blood to save lives, demonstrating the impact of early education and careful planning.
