National Hematology Days
The second edition has opened in Yaounde under the theme "Blood safety in Cameroon". Organised by the Cameroon Society of Hematology, SOCAHEMA in collaboration with the National Blood Transfusion Service,NBTS, the three -day event brings together experts in the field, researchers and students in a bid to brainstorm on ameliorating transfusion safety in Cameroon.
During an inaugural lesson delivered by Prof. Tayou, head of the Medico-technical Department of the NBTS, he mentioned that such challenges as leadership, education of the population on blood donation, prevalence of certain pathologies, lack of resources and little or no respect of regulations hampered transfusion safety. To Mrs. Ze Kakanou Florence, Technical Adviser and Representative of the Minister of Public Health, "the conference should help open up new perspective in in the field of hemovigilance, strengthen bridges between research and clinical practice, medical biology and innovative blood safety strategies". She further encouraged participants at the conference to produce more local data and to raise Cameroonian research to international standards. Prof. Dora Mbanya, General Manager of the NBTS and also President of SOCAHEMA, said with The NBTS having the mandate to ensure safe blood nationwide, it has been involved with SOCAHEMA in a bid to fine-tune strategies to promote safe blood in the country. Present at the opening ceremony was Prof. Tetanye Ekoe, President of the Management Committee of the NBTS, and also the representative of WHO.
