DEMONSTRATION

[Quick hints for non-traditional Hot Yoga teachers]

What is a demonstration? A demonstration (demo) happens, when a Hot Yoga teacher in a public class stops the flow of the class for a moment and shows the Students how to do a posture, or shows (explains?) some technical aspect of alignment, modification, etc.

The demonstration skills are relatively easy to improve and that improvement can be achieved in a relatively short period of time.

Here's the good stuff:

::: Tell them what you will show them. Show them. Tell them what you showed them. :::

That's it.

Well, in addition:

> When you speak, don't demonstrate. When you demonstrate - don't speak.
Announce that you will demonstrate something.
I usually say loudly: "Everyone, watch me!" and I hold up my hands, pointing upward through the index fingers, just before I demo.

> Choose your demonstration subject wisely; spend no more than 60 seconds on each; perhaps only 1 or 2 demos in the standing set, 1 demo in the floor sequence.
If you demo too much, the class changes from a 'workout' into a 'workshop'. For Hot Yoga, that's no good.

> Watch your Students eyes.
When you stop the class in order to demo or speak in detail to explain something, the Students' eyes should be shining, not blank. If the eyes are blank, you talk / demo too often, too much. Or you're too serious?

> When you "demo" and the Students tilt their head to the side...
or lean forward towards you (major signs of being interested) - you're doing it right, baby!

***

We practice those kind of skill-improvement techniques in all our teacher training courses, of course. Those above are just a few quick fixes.

Check the shoulders! [For new teachers, any style of Yoga]

For new, just-graduated Yoga teachers, or for those who have been teaching for a while, but somehow still end up being a bit nervous about the job - here are a few words that will help solve a common problem.

In daily life, when we find ourselves in a difficult situation mentally or emotionally, or if we are afraid, or angry - our body responds. And one thing that often happens: your shoulders go up.

In the Yoga room, when you are teaching class, you may be scared or excited, and the same thing happens, your shoulders go up. But as a Yoga teacher, you must be careful of this, and bring your shoulders down. If they stay up, you look scared, and it is also bad for your voice.

Try to keep your shoulders down. Don't worry about trying to change your feelings or inner state, or telling yourself to 'relax'. Just bring your shoulders down.

I tell you to focus on the shoulders, rather than saying 'relax', because 'relax' doesn't produce good teaching. As I often mention in my teacher training workshops, as teachers, we don't want to be 'relaxed' - we want to be free and alive.

Good luck in your teaching!
