Cistanche Tubulosa VS Cistanche Deserticola
, a genus with around 22 species worldwide, is primarily found in desert regions of the warm and arid areas of the Northern Hemisphere. Its distribution includes the Iberian Peninsula in Europe, Northern Africa, the Arabian Peninsula in Asia, Iran, Mongolia, northwest China, and other similar regions.
As outlined in the 2015 edition of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, the medicinal herb Cistanche is derived from the dried, fleshy stems with scaly leaves of Cistanche deserticola or Cistanche tubulosa. These stems are harvested just before they emerge from the ground or shortly after, with the inflorescence removed promptly. The stems are then either sun-dried or partially buried in sand to prepare them for medicinal use.
In China, Cistanche tubulosa and Cistanche deserticola are currently the most widely cultivated and productive species. However, this leads to an often-asked question: which species is superior, and how can one distinguish between the two?
