Mama's Kitchen

OUR MISSION: Mama’s Kitchen believes that everyone is entitled to the basic necessity of life We have over 1,000 awesome volunteers who make this happen.

Mama's Kitchen cooks, packages, and delivers food at no cost to folks in San Diego County who are too ill to shop and cook. We also run a food pantry on-site at our facility on Home Avenue in San Diego. Please visit our website at www.mamaskitchen.org

Mama's Kitchen holds several fundraisers throughout the year:
-Mama's Day, held the Friday before Mother's Day each year, is a restaurant tasting

with over 55 participating restaurants who prepare signature dishes for our guests.
- Mama's Pies, our Thanksgiving fundraiser. Starting in October, our supporters sell Thanksgiving pies to their family, friends and co-workers, who then pick up their pies throughout San Diego County on the day before Thanksgiving.
-Tree of Life, commemorating World AIDS Day, is held every year on December 1st at Village Hillcrest, with a candlelight vigil and tree lighting ceremony.

Volunteering is a great activity for corporate groups, but for this one, it's a tradition! 🙌✨

Last night, we welcomed US Grant Hotel employees across departments who joined us in the kitchen for their annual volunteer shift, where they bundled meals and helped us gear up for today’s deliveries.

This week is National Health Center Week! A great opportunity to highlight the commitment and passion of Community Health Centers.

Last week, we welcomed back Fresenius for the fourth time! 🙌

They are truly special because while they consistently volunteer with us, they also help connect us with patients who may benefit from our services 🍽️

During their shift, they bundled all the meals shown, which far exceeded our expectations! Their efficiency and focus made for an easier Friday morning for our volunteers and the Operations crew.

Yesterday, we were visited by Jack in the Box, who broke a volunteering record! 🥇

These rockstar volunteers took 11 routes and delivered 1,452 meals to over 120 clients. This means they delivered to the most clients we've ever seen from a corporate group on a single delivery day! 🎉

Thank you, Jack in the Box, for giving back to your community and allowing us to depend on you. We hope to see you again soon! 🙌

We are so thankful for the opportunity to attend the Life Science Cares Summer Bash this past weekend.

This unique and wonderful gathering fostered collaboration and new ideas within the San Diego life science community and numerous nonprofits serving this region.

We are grateful for the rich conversations with the Life Science Cares team, the Board of Advisors members who attended, and for PNC Bank for underwriting the event!

Delivering to all of San Diego County takes a village, and we are always looking for more volunteers to assist!

So we are happy to announce that we have officially opened our opportunity for volunteer ride-alongs with staff.

During this shift, you will work with staff to deliver a route while getting hands-on training in a company vehicle. This allows you to ask questions and learn how they approach delivering to our clients.

Our Story

Mama’s Kitchen, a community-driven organization, believes that everyone is entitled to the basic necessity of life — nutritious food. Our nutrition services improve the lives of women, men, and children vulnerable to hunger due to HIV, cancer, or other critical illnesses.

- Our Home Delivered Meal Program provides three medically-tailored meals a day, 7 days a week, to our critically ill neighbors and their children.

- Our food pantry offers a monthly grocery shopping opportunity to low-income, HIV-positive residents, with fresh produce, lean proteins and nutrient-dense food choices.

- Our medical nutrition program provides intensive nutrition education and counseling from our registered dietitian, so that clients learn to self-manage their dietary needs.
