✨Clinical Case Highlight丨Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma in a Dog✨
A middle-aged Corgi🐕 presented with a long-standing history of postprandial regurgitation and projectile vomiting, which had progressively worsened since the age of five. The pet patient experienced significant weight loss, declining from 14 kg to 8 kg.😣 Due to suspicion of reflux esophagitis, the Corgi was referred for further evaluation.🩺💊
Diagnostic workup revealed abnormal liver function parameters and hypercalcemia, raising concern for an underlying neoplastic process. Contrast radiography of the demonstrated luminal narrowing with a mass effect.😖
Under general anesthesia, using the TK-VETKIT identified an intraluminal esophageal mass. Endoscopic biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Endoscopic debulking was subsequently performed using biopsy forceps and an electrosurgical snare to relieve obstruction.
Although clinical signs improved temporarily following the procedure, the aggressive nature of the tumor, postoperative esophageal stricture, and high risk of recurrence ultimately led to euthanasia at the pet owner’s request.😭
This case highlights the value of as a minimally invasive tool for both diagnosis and palliative management of chronic esophageal disease in patients.💙
