PET-CT Imaging: Advancing Parkinson's Disease Management

Parkinson's disease remains challenging to diagnose and monitor due to symptom overlap with other parkinsonian syndromes. PET-CT imaging has become essential for precise evaluation and management.

Enhancing Diagnostic Accuracy

Combining metabolic PET with anatomical CT provides quantitative biomarkers that improve diagnostics. Dopamine transporter imaging with tracers like ¹⁸F-FP-CIT allows precise assessment of nigrostriatal degeneration. AI-assisted DAT-PET analysis achieves an AUC of 0.96 in distinguishing Parkinson's from controls.

Meanwhile, ¹⁸F-FDG PET identifies metabolic patterns that differentiate true Parkinson's from atypical syndromes, achieving an AUC of 0.97 in differential diagnosis.

Tracer Development and Clinical Use

Novel radiotracers represent a promising frontier. Alpha-synuclein-specific tracers in advanced trials may soon enable direct visualization of pathological aggregates, potentially transforming early diagnosis and treatment monitoring.
