International Students' Surgical Society of China - ISSSoC

An organization started by students to help students learn about surgery, experience certain aspects of what surgeons do, and give back to the community.

As an organization made up of Medical students literally from just about every country in the world, we aim to use this advantage to the fullest and start taking and creating opportunities for ourselves to learn from surgeons from different countries and to use all the resources that we can possibly get our hands on to the absolute fullest. With all these students filled with a passion for surgery, learning, and giving back, we will be organizing conferences, workshops, inter-university surgical skills and surgical knowledge competitions, webinars, interviews, create a research program, health awareness events, events to give back to the community and so much more! The best thing about joining our organization is that once we graduate from med school and go back to our respective countries, we will literally have a worldwide network of doctors already setup and in place!

Suturing and knot tying are one of the fundamental clinical skills that come in handy whether you're in the operating theatre or at the site of an accident. Cosequently, It doesn't matter if you're aiming to become a surgeon or pediatrician, suturing and knot tying can be useful at any point in time in your medical career. With that in mind, ISSSoC organized a workshop to teach these important skills to its members and give them an opportunity to practice various suturing methods and knot under the supervision of doctors who were kind enough to lend us their time. And judging by how focused everyone looked at the workshop, It's safe to assume that everyone learned a lot and waked away with a better understanding of this important clinical skill.

The Electrocardiogram plays a major role in the medical profession. Understanding and interpreting the ECG are skills that every doctor should have as they play a major role in diagnosis and monitoring treatment. The ECG course conducted by ISSSoC this semester was taught by Dr.Henry Anselmo Mayala. The course covered the various parts of a normal ECG and interpretation of several common pathological ECGs.

physical examination is one of the primary skills any physician and medical practitioner must master in order to be able to treat a patient. The importance of a sound understanding of physical examination can not be understated. the purpose of this course was to teach members how to carry out a physical examination. For those who were already familiar with this crucial skill, the course allowed them to polish their skills and review what they had already learnt. Here are some pictures from the event.

A new year of ISSSoC kicked off last week with a clinical skills course comprising of Intravenous and Intramuscular injections, blood drawing and wound dressing and debridement. The purpose of this course was to teach students these essential techniques and allow everyone to practice them.
All of the aforementioned skills are elemental in the world of emergency medicine and the more familiar students are with them, the better off they will be. practice is the key to mastering any skill and the key to this course was to provide the students an opportunity to practice these skills under the supervision of the experienced physicians.

To start off the new semester, ISSSoC teamed up with healthcare professionals from Lifeshine first aid wuhan and provided our members with a course in CPR and emergency protocol. The course followed the guidelines of the American Heart Association, which patners LifeShine First aid in providing healthcare training in wuhan. The event was a success and due to its popularity, ISSSoC will be repeating it next month. Here are our members in action!

As the cold settled in and the semester wound down to its end, it was time for the last ISSSoC event of the semester.
The event was not a workshop or course but rather , an interactive seminar.
The topic of the seminar was "Triage-emergency protocol and reaction"
Triage is the assignment of degrees of urgency to wounds or illness to decide the order of treatment of a large number of patients or casualties.
The seminar revolved around what to do in the case of an emergency, be it medical or natural.
It was conducted by our very own Dr. Juan pablo MD, and followed by fun stimulation exercises and games to test the knowledge and understanding of everyone who came.
Our committee members acted as survivors of a plane crash and special mention goes to the acting skills of Neda and Hamid.. who's performance led everyone to believe that they really were in a plane crash.

Trauma and emergency cases often require urgent intervention to prevent a worsening of the situation. An immediate response often depends upon the health care provider and the level of her/ his abilities.
It is of the utmost importance that a health care provider has the knowledge and experience to deal with such cases of emergency.
with this in mind, ISSSoC organized a clinical skills course which focused on IV intervention , wound debridement and neurological assessment, all of which are important skills which come in handy in the case of an emergency.
under the expert guidance of Dr. pablo, Dr. Yeltay, Dr. Yasir, Dr. Randy and our nurse Angela, students were able to practice IV incubation ( often on each other) learn how to do a full neurological examination and practice wound debridement.
A special mention goes to Dr. Yasir who even allowed his students to practice IV incubation on himself!! Hope you enjoy the pictures just as much as we enjoyed the course!!

A new academic year meant a new year of ISSSoC and what better way to start off the year than with a game night and social mixer? The night was intended to let all ISSSoC members, old and new, get to know each other and the society a little bit better.. and the turnout was unbelievable. There was food, drinks, laugher, lots and lots of cookies, a team trivia competition which got a little heated and even more cookies :D ( everyone had to bring a cookie as an entrance ticket) At the end, everyone got a little glimpse of what ISSSoC really is; a society that is for the students, by the students and the intended to help us learn more about the vast world of medicine in a hands on, enjoyable manner.
PS. Congratulations to the green team for winning be trivia challenge!

ISSSoC just organized its third event of the semester with a clinical workshop on wound debridement, drug intubation and neurological assessment. A big thank you to all doctors for making the event a success. Pictures to be uploaded soon!

We held another CPR workshop for those who had not been trained yet.

We included Infant, child and adult CPR, heimlich maneuver on infants, children and adults for choking patients, as well as how to bag a patient with an Ambubag.

We further included an introduction to self defense under water.

Great work once again by the ISSSoC committee and all the students who helped teach the course! The CPR and Self defense under water portions were led by Penny Wu, Dr. Rakhmanov taught the Ambubag section, Talha Ahmed Raja taught the choking section, and Dr. Juan Pablo Escalera Antezanna taught the proper use of AEDs and practiced the simulation with the students.
