Research from Japan shows that spending just three days immersed in a forest environment can increase the activity of natural killer (NK) cells—the immune cells that help the body fight off cancer—by up to 80%. Scientists attribute the effect to breathing in phytoncides, antimicrobial compounds released by trees, as well as reduced stress and improved immune function from time in nature. The boost in NK cell activity can last for more than a week after the forest stay, highlighting the powerful health benefits of “forest bathing.”
