Travel After Surgery

Liposuction and Travel: How long after liposuction can I travel? This applies not only to liposuction but to any surgery. It depends a lot on each surgeon’s protocols, the type of surgery, and its extent. The question we were asked was specifically about liposuction, and I consider liposuction one of the riskiest surgeries in plastic surgery.

The reason is that it carries the highest risk of pulmonary thromboembolism. And thromboembolism worsens if you are on bed rest for a long time. That’s why we recommend waiting 14 days before international travel.

Civil aviation authorities here in Colombia won’t allow you to board a plane if you haven’t been operated on for 14 days or more. So, it depends not only on government policies and regulations but also on the surgeon. How soon does your surgeon recommend you travel? That’s very personalized, but the minimum recovery time I give is 14 days, which is what civil aviation regulations require. However, I perform more complex surgeries where I tell the patient it’s preferable to stay longer, three or four weeks, because experience tells you how certain types of surgeries can progress.

Likewise, for very minor surgeries, like eyelid or ear surgery, you could actually travel the next day without any problem; the issue would be whether or not they let you board at the airport.

How long should you wear a compression garment?

It’s relative; it depends on each surgeon. Personally, I prefer to wear it for only two to three months. Patients ask, or I see patients who have been operated on for more than a year and are still wearing their compression garment.

Personally, I recommend not wearing it for extended periods. You’ve seen it when a cast is removed from a limb. When they remove the cast from a patient after six weeks or more,

Their skin is white, hairy, atrophic, and unsightly. That’s what happens with compression garment use. If you’re constantly putting pressure on tissue, that tissue will thin out, thin out, thin out, and the quality of the tissue will deteriorate.

So, I recommend not overusing compression garments. If you want to wear one after your surgery to wear a dress and look your best, you can. But wearing a girdle all day, every day, for years, that’s not good.

Overweight and liposuction?

I love this question, and you know I always stress to you that liposuction isn’t for weight loss, it’s not for managing obesity or overweight; liposuction is for sculpting your body. It’s true that a chubby girl can undergo surgery and look divine, yes, they look divine, but they’re not perfect enough because they can’t remove all the fat that needs to be removed to create a harmonious body. So when you’re overweight and you have surgery, yes, they can remove a lot of your abdomen, some of your back, but you’ll be left with fat on your upper back and arms that the surgeon couldn’t remove to avoid exposing you to greater risk, because you can’t remove all the fat you don’t want; there’s always a limit to that fat.

So I will always recommend to the patient, if you want to look perfect, arrive in perfect condition. If you want to look better, yes, I can operate on you if you’re overweight and you’ll surely look great, but your body won’t be harmonious, because your arms might not match a small waist, your legs will look fat, and that with a small waist, yes, you’ll look like a chubby girl with liposuction, but it won’t be a slender, beautiful body, the way one would like to look and the way patients expect to look. So that’s one of the reasons, and the other is because I can’t bring in all the fat I want. That fat comes with blood. If you lose a lot of blood, the risk of your surgery increases, and in that regard, I prefer to be safe. So if you come to me chubby, I know you’ll lose weight well, but you won’t lose excellent weight, so I prefer you to arrive in perfect condition if you want perfect results.

Multiple Lipos

Multiple lipos, this is a case I like to address. A very frequently asked question: Why don’t I perform secondary surgeries? Why can’t I have multiple lipos? I’m actually stopping performing secondary liposuction on patients with severely compromised abdomens. Patients need to understand that liposuction requires a layer of fat. Some patients are left dry. In liposuctions where the patient is left dry, it’s common for unextracted fat islands to remain. These islands will generate bulges, but the cannula won’t be able to enter the areas where the fat cushion isn’t. This will make the surgery more difficult and riskier. The harder the tissue, the more force required to pass the cannula, and the patient’s performance risk increases. Aside from that, fat trapped with fibrosis won’t come out as easily as healthy fat. After liposuction, some areas will be left with more fibrosis than others, and this will make it difficult. a second procedure, in the second procedure your surgeon is going to go in, he’s going to remove the fat and when the healthy fat starts to come out, he’s going to leave bulges where the fat is tied up with fibrosis or where there are lumps of fibrosis and he’s going to expose that fibrosis more, that is, the procedure can end up worsening the problem, so I’m always going to recommend that you get liposuction once in your life, hopefully it’s just one, if your first liposuction went well, take care of it.
