The word “retreat” comes from the Latin retrahere, meaning to draw back.
It entered Old French as retrait, and then Middle English as retret—always carrying the connotation of withdrawing, pulling back, or stepping away.
It was originally a military term but by the 14th–17th centuries, the word expanded beyond military:
* Monasteries began offering religious retreats: a time to withdraw from society for prayer, silence, and reflection.
* Later adopted by writers, artists, philosophers who would retreat into nature or solitude to work or reflect.
* In the 20th century, spiritual, wellness, and therapeutic movements repurposed it emphasising healing, personal growth, and transformation.
Now? “Retreat” carries emotional, psychological, and even brand power: It’s no longer just about escape. It’s about intention: creating a pause, a sacred container, a held space for people to reconnect with themselves and others.
