Why learn Spanish in a traditional classroom when you can learn while enjoying early morning coffee with your host family, gallo pinto on your plate, and beautiful sunsets to end the day 🌅🇨🇷

When Fabian landed in Jacó with just a backpack and a wide-open itinerary, he had one goal: experience Latin America for real. Not just as a tourist, but by living it.

Through our Homestay program, he shared meals, stories, and everyday life with a local family—and came away with more than just Spanish skills. He found connection, culture, and a deeper sense of what _Pura Vida_ really means.

Fabian came to Jacó from Switzerland with nothing but a backpack and an open mind, ready to kick off his 4-month solo journey through Central and South America. His goal? Total cultural immersion—and he found it through our Homestay program.

A big part of learning to surf is understanding the ocean - the tides, currents, breaks of the waves and so on.

If you want to get to a point where you don’t want to surf with an instructor, learning these aspects of the ocean will keep you safe and help you catch great waves!

One of the things we teach in our Wave Theory Class is the Anatomy of a Wave. Let’s break it down.

🌊 The face: The clean, unbroken part of the wave where you actually ride. Think of it as your canvas — where you pop up, cruise, and carve.
Steeper face = faster ride.

🌊 The peak: The highest point of the wave — it’s where the wave starts to break. This is your sweet spot for catching a ride.

🌊 The lip: The top edge of the wave that pitches forward when the wave breaks. It’s powerful and can knock you around if you mistime your paddle.

🌊 The shoulder: The sloped, unbroken part of the wave off to the side of the peak. This is the zone you want to ride along — smooth, open, and more forgiving.

🌊The pocket: Where the wave has the most power and thrust.

🌊 The whitewater: The foamy, broken part of the wave. A great place to practice your pop-ups and get used to the power of waves before heading to the face.

🌊 Beware of closeouts: This happens when the wave breaks all at once, across the whole length. You’ll usually see a big, straight wall of water folding over. They are very hard to ride. If you see no shoulder and everything breaks at once? Skip it and wait for the next one. Look for waves that peel either left or right.
