A STORY ABOUT A BOY AND HIS EARS
Although we are not writers, in our clinic a variety of stories are woven. Stories that only life – the big case of a comedian – can tell. Let us hear one of them…
After an otoplasty had been scheduled, a ten-year-old boy arrived, excited that he would finally get rid of his bat ears. Because this problem has been bothering him a lot, he could not wait for the intervention to begin.
The procedure was planned under local anesthesia since the little patient was very cooperative and steady.
As the operation commenced, the surgeon noticed a strange phenomenon: slightly larger bruises while injecting a local anaesthetic and more profuse bleeding after only a few centimeters of the incision.
Accordingly, he made the decision to halt the procedure, suture the wound and arrest the bleeding.
Not realizing what had happened, the boy came out of the operating room completely confused, disappointed that his bat ears were still protruding.
He was then sent to a lab for the tests of hemostasis tests, in order to detect the origin of bleeding.
(Luckily, the above-mentioned surgeon has had extensive experience in treating patients with hemostatic disorders, and even defended the MSc thesis in that field.)
Unfortunately, our patient was referred from one lab to the other without detecting this subtle bleeding disorder.
Based on a vast experience, the surgeon decided to use an antifibrinolytic solution pre and postoperatively like it has been used on numerous occasions with dealing with similar conditions.
The day has finally arrived for the sweet little boy to get rid of the bat ears!
The operation went uneventfully. Ten days later, the boy came to have his bandage removed and to witness the gross change of his facial appearance. Simultaneously, the boy’s mother was telling the story of his compliance and concern not to disrupt the bandage during sleep that he ended up almost with the stiff neck.
Besides the boy was caught searching meticulously all about professional activities of famous Professor Zoran Stajčić on the Internet who, otherwise, is his uncle, wishing that one day he would follow in the footsteps of an aesthetic surgeon. Aiming for this important life goal, he has already taken the first steps – the money that his uncle gave him would be used for buying medical books.
In order to express his joy and gratitude for the „new ears“, on the day of removing the bandage, he chose a bouquet of flowers for our surgical nurse Tanja, and presented to the clinic a special trophy, engraved with personal dedication, saying:
BEOGRAD-CENTAR
HIPPOCRATES WOULD BE PROUD OF YOU!
MIHAJLO
It is not enough to say that the staff of the Dental/Medical Clinic Beograd–Centar was left breathless, with strong impression that Mihajlo left on everyone. Visibly touched and above all proud, his uncle hugged his nephew, while tears of joy running down little boy’s cheeks.
On the way home, the mother, as usually, advised her infinitely happy son to put a hat over his ears, to which he replied with a big smile:
„Mom, I'm handsome now!“
Like in a movie, this touching scene in our waiting room was attended by a patient from UK. Driven by the emotions he witnessed, he said that it was one of the most intense moments he had ever experienced and which he will surely take with him far away.
And so, this story goes on…
