Tridosha or the three bodily humors are believed to govern the functioning of our bodies on the physical and emotional level. These humors are called vata, pitta, and kapha.

Ayurveda also identifies seven basic types of tissues that constitute the body, collectively called the Sapta Dhatu. These include Rasa (Body fluids), Rakta (blood), Mamsa (muscles), Medas (fat) Ashi (bones & joints), Majja (bone marrow), Sukra (Semen) and Ojas (vital essence)

Another basic notion is that of Trimalas i.e. excretory materials which include Mutra (Urine), Pureesha (faeces) and Sveda (sweat).

Ayurveda believes that the universe is composed of five basic elements or Pancha Maha bhutas. These are Prithvi (earth), Apya (water), Teja (fire), Vayu (air) and Akasha (earth).

Ayurveda believes that the constitution of the human body is also similar. Hence there is a fundamental harmony between universe and man.

The Pancha Maha Bhuta theory is thus a call to action for achieving a healthy balance between the self and the surroundings.
