This 15 year old girl had unsuccesfull ear reconstruction surgeries as a young child. We share the joy with her and her parents that we were able to perform today an ear reconstruction using temporoparietal fascia (TPF) in this very difficult case.

When trauma results in a defect larger than one quarter of the ear, reconstruction has to be done using rib cartilage. Careful planning is needed to ensure the framework fits perfectly.

Just completed this new ear for a girl with hemifacial microsomia which is in a majority of cases also associated with microtia. Ear reconstruction in patients with hemifacial microsomia represents a special challenge due to skin volume deficiency.

Before each surgery, our surgeons carefully mark each patient to determine the future position and axis of the new ear. The position is determined as to replicate the distance of the normal ear to the eye and lips. The axis is determined based on the difference in angles between the nose and the normal ear.

The best surgical option for ear reconstruction is using the patient's own rib cartilage to create the new ear. There is no possibility of rejecting this type of natural impant and in the hands of our trained and skillful surgeons, the rib cartilage is shaped into a perfectly natural looking ear.

Meet Dr Aleksandar Vlahovic, pediatric and plastic/reconstructive surgeon and part of our Ear Reconstruction Team. Dr Vlahovic is an assistant professor at the University of Belgrade Medical Faculty and expert in solving congenital deformities in children. He has extensive international experience and has co-authored the "Pediatric and adolescent plastic surgery for the clinician" textbook issued by Springer in 2018.
