In the PRIME TECHNOLOGIES event held at the Curacao Hilton Hotel, on January 27, 2011, we presented a new, stateof-the-art Grounding System alternative for solving grounding issues/problems that haunt electrical and electronic
systems: The “Faragauss Electromagnetic Plasma Coated Grounding Electrode system”.
Invited speakers Marco Chen from Panama and Luis Cano from Mexico summarized present-day knowledge on these
two subjects, and explained the extraordinary benefits of the FARAGAUSS electromagnetic grounding electrode system
and the Electrode Polarization benefits, especially in high-resistivity soils or rocks typical of the Caribbean islands.
Among the benefits that the FARAGAUSS system offers are: a very low grounding resistance, greater personnel safety
through a true zero volt ground and POLARIZED terrain up to 85m radially from the electrode, increased systems
efficiency, improved energy quality through dissipation of high-frequency electrical noise, energy savings through
reduction of electric, magnetic and electromagnetic losses at motors and transformers, stable “0” logic zero required by
electronics and data transmission systems, unidirectional current flow, and the dissipation of 97% of the lightning
electromagnetic plasma minimizing voltage differences in the terrain.
Samples of a FARAGAUSS electromagnetic grounding electrode kit and a lightning rod were shown, and catalogs were
distributed. In addition, Mr. Rudolph Haynes of PRIME TECHNOLOGIES showed pictures of many installations that have
been made for telecommunication towers in Saba, St. Maarten, Statia, Curacao and Bonaire in the past years. In these
installations, the grounding electrode resistance obtained was always below 2 ohms and in many cases below 1 ohm,
thus complying with such stringent requirements.
Important differences you should know between the Faragauss Electrode and Conventional copper clad steel
grounding rods hammered into the ground and why our system is beneficial to all builings and facilities anywhere on
planet earth.
Polarization of the earth to a minimum of 85m from the electrode means better safety for persons standing by or walking in the
area when lightning strikes or there is a short circuit in the plant.
Another advantage when you have large electrodes in a big industrial plant, is that the polarization of the earth effectively
interconnects all electrodes without the need for a connecting cable required by code.
This polarization only occurs horizontally from the center of the Faragauss electrode.
The negative polarization begins at mid depth of the rod all the way to the earth surface in a circle with 85m diameter.
The size of the rod is a function of the maximum expected short-circuit. I.e. The size of the transformer or the main power
disconnect.
In the case of lightning, the polarization is stable under all conditions.
Lightning should not occur with Faragauss installations, in 95 percent of cases.

QUESTION 1. After installing a FARAGAUSS grounding kit at a transformer and considering the equipotentiality of
the ground up to 85m radially, is a client with conventional grounding within the equipotential area exposed to any
danger?
ANSWER 1. The equipotentiality itself answers the question. Equipotentiality dismisses any and all dangers because
there will be no potential difference between the FARAGAUSS grounding electrode system and the conventional
grounding electrode whether it be rods, plates or meshes.
QUESTION 2. After installing a FARAGAUSS grounding kit at a transformer, in the event of a shortcircuit fault in the
electrical system of a client, how does the fault current dissipated in the earth return to the transformer if the
FARAGAUSS grounding system is unidirectional?
ANSWER 2. The FARAGAUSS system is not exactly a diode and does not function as a diode. Its unidirectional property
is designed to conduct the return potential in a controlled way and allow electrical protection devices to function
properly. The fault current will return through the FARAGAUSS grounding system. Any destructive peaks of the return
current will be dissipated in the form of heat in the lateral cables of the Admittance Synchronizer (Coplagauss), at the
same time it controls the destructive peak reactance.
QUESTION 3. In the European electrical systems, the grounding is “negative”, while in Curacao it is “positive”. What
will happen when installing FARAGAUSS grounding system which polarizes negatively?
ANSWER 3. The FARAGAUSS magnetoactive electrode allows stable operation of a system both in positive mode to
earth and in the conventional, negative mode. Grounding with positive reactance is a technique used by
telecommunications companies in central telephony such as Ericsson. FARAGAUSS provides an excellent solution for
compatibility and susceptibility during the operation of positively grounded systems, because when a COPLAGAUSS is
used exclusively for the positive DC potentials to ground in the order of +12 to +98 volts, the positive reactance
obtained is controlled within its limits avoiding the creation of potential gradients that affect other equipment which
are not referred to this procedure. The effect of cathodic superficial polarization that FARAGAUSS offers allows the
stable polar operation of a grounding system, since the ground fields navigating in the surface of the earth -and even
deeper- alternate their magnetic polarity, therefore they change the magnetic and electrical polarity of the soil in a
random fashion.

QUESTION 4. How will the FARAGAUSS polarization function in the event that lightning strikes directly in the ground.
Will the lightning propagate on the equipotential ground, affecting clients that do not have a FARAGAUSS grounding
electrode?
ANSWER 4. The Earth soil conductivity in the best case is five million times less than a metallic cable or object referred
to the relation Siemens/meter. To say that the Earth can confine and dissipate all the electrical energy sent to ground is
a myth, because the conductivity is inversely proportional to the soil resistivity. When lightning hits the ground in the
equipotential soil area, 80% of the energy will be dissipated in the lateral cables of the Admittance Synchronizer
COPLAGAUSS and 17% will be dissipated in the cable between the COPLAGAUSS and the FARAGAUSS electrode. The
laws of physics that apply here are Lenz Law, Hall Effect, and Joule Law. The dissipation is accomplished by
electromagnetic surges in ultrashort times.
