Η αλλεργική ρινίτιδα είναι μια συστηματική φλεγμονή η οποία εμφανίζεται μετά από έκθεση σε συγκεκριμένους ερεθιστικούς παράγοντες που ονομάζονται αλλεργιογόνα, δηλαδή ουσίες οι οποίες όταν έρθουν σε επαφή με τον βλεννογόνο της μύτης ενεργοποιούν μια ευρεία ανοσολογική απάντηση με υπερέκκριση ισταμίνης, οδηγώντας στην εμφάνιση ποικίλων συμπτωμάτων.
