New flu vaccine or jab (vaxigrip tetra which covers 2 A and 2 B strains of flu virus) is now available and you can have it done with Dr Anna Kotikian. Flu jab takes up to 14 days for full protection after having it and lasts for one year. The aim is to protect people who are more likely to develop complications from flu. Current advice is to get the flu jab in autumn for people who are aged 65 and over, who have on-going (chronic disease) such as lung, kidney, heart and liver diseases, as well as diabetes, immune system disorders, pregnant women and all children who are aged 2-8 years. People who have a severe egg allergy or have had allergic reactions to previous flu jabs should not be vaccinated.

Taking antibiotics when you don’t need them speeds up antibiotic resistance. This also happens when animals are given antibiotics. To prevent the spread of antibiotic resistance, farmers and the food industry should stop using antibiotics to promote growth and prevent disease in healthy animals.

What is cystitis?
Cystitis is the inflammation of the bladder. It is usually caused by a urine infection. Typical symptoms are pain when you pass urine, and passing urine frequently. You may also have pain in your lower tummy (abdomen), blood in your urine and a high temperature (fever). Your urine may also become cloudy and may become smelly. Some conditions cause symptoms that may be mistaken for cystitis. For example, vaginal thrush. Your doctor will do a simple dipstick test on a urine sample to check for cystitis. Once it's clear that it is cystitis antibiotics might be prescribed. Have lots to drink is traditional advice to 'flush out the bladder'.
