Polycystic O***y Syndrome (PCOS) affects many women worldwide, yet diagnosing it is often more complicated than people realise. If you’ve ever felt confused or frustrated by the diagnostic process, you’re not alone.
PCOS presents differently in each person. Some experience irregular periods, while others may struggle with acne, weight gain, hair loss, or fertility issues. If a woman has visible ovarian cysts on an ultrasound, it is easier, but many women don’t have visible ovarian cysts at all.
Moreover, the symptoms are similar or overlap with other conditions. It can be similar with Thyroid disorders, adrenal problems, insulin resistance, and other hormonal imbalances. That’s why PCOS is often misdiagnosed or overlooked.
Doctors may use different criteria, like the Rotterdam Criteria, which requires 2 out of 3 signs:
- Irregular ovulation
- Excess androgen levels
- Polycystic ovaries on an ultrasound
This means two women with similar symptoms might receive different diagnoses depending on where they live or their Doctor.
