A 9-Kilogram Tumor Measuring 35 cm Was Removed from the Abdomen of a 71-Year-Old Female Patient at Near East University Hospital

A 71-year-old female patient, who had been suffering for the past year from abdominal bloating, excessive gas, inability to defecate, urinary incontinence, and difficulty eating—resulting in a weight loss of approximately 10 kilograms—regained her health after undergoing surgery at Near East University Hospital.

Diagnostic tests revealed a massive mass measuring approximately 35x40 centimeters that completely filled the patient’s abdominal cavity. The tumor was successfully removed during surgery performed by Prof. Dr. Salih Müjdat Balkan, Chief Physician of Near East University Hospital, Associate Professor Dr. Ali Özant, and their surgical team.

Following a smooth operation, the patient’s urinary and gas issues resolved by the first day. After resuming oral intake, she recovered and was discharged from the hospital on the third day.

MS (Multiple Sclerosis)

MS (Multiple Sclerosis) is a disease that affects the central nervous system and manifests through attacks. It is chronic and currently has no definitive cure. When the immune system is disrupted due to an unknown cause, it begins attacking its own cells responsible for nerve transmission in the brain and spinal cord. In MS, the immune system attacks the protective sheath (myelin) surrounding the nerve fibers, causing inflammation, tissue damage, and various impairments.

Due to this tissue damage, the brain is unable to send proper signals to other parts of the body, leading to MS attacks that may involve difficulties in walking, speaking, or seeing.

When the myelin sheath repairs itself, symptoms may disappear; however, the attacks can recur at different intervals. Medications and other therapies can help reduce the frequency and severity of these attacks.

How Does MS (Multiple Sclerosis) Manifest Itself?

The symptoms of MS are highly varied. Due to the course of the disease, these symptoms may differ from one person to another. The severity of MS symptoms, the frequency of attacks, and the time between episodes can also vary. The two most common symptoms of MS are difficulty walking and fatigue.

◾ Difficulty Walking

◾ Walking difficulty can lead to injuries due to falls. It can occur for several reasons:

◾Trouble maintaining balance
◾Numbness in the legs or feet
◾ Muscle weakness
◾Muscle spasticity
◾A sense of fatigue

About 80% of MS patients report fatigue. The fatigue experienced after MS can weaken the individual, making it difficult to work and maintain a normal daily life.
