We are more than just a hospital!
21st century marks the transition of paternalistic medicine into more patient-oriented practice where the patient is placed in a more autonomous position with respect to his/her own health decisions. Autonomy refers to a higher degree of involvement in managing own medical decisions once fully equipped with the means to do so. For autonomy, a medical professional needs to provide objective information without coercion or manipulation into what he/she thinks is best for the patient.
Biopsychosocial approach in medicine considers not only the biological aspects of disease, but also the social and psychological interactions behind illness and how they affect individuals’ susceptibility as well as response to it. What this means is, ilnness is not a biological phenomenon. It involves a complex interplay of many interactions resulting in a unique manifestation in each individual.
Understanding uniqueness of each individual helps us understand how they respond to disease and how they would like to deal with it. It is not our role to decide for them! However, understanding uniqueness generates a much higher power of knowledge that can guide diagnosis and treatment options in a personalized manner.
We are all unique human beings with a different genetic code and social/environmental/ psychological exposures. When we are all so much different from each other, how can we expect standardized medicine to pruoduce identical effects for everyone?
