Scientists at Tufts University have developed a groundbreaking “smart” dental implant that not only replaces missing teeth. It can actually connect with your nerves and communicate with your brain, just like a natural tooth.

Unlike conventional implants that are screwed into the jawbone and lack any real sensation, this new design uses a biodegradable coating infused with stem cells and nerve-growth proteins. This allows the implant to naturally grow into the gum, integrate with soft tissue, and reconnect nerve pathways.

And get this, it secures itself without drilling. As it settles into the socket, it heals with the surrounding tissue and helps restore the mouth-to-brain signaling lost when a natural tooth is removed.

In early trials with rodents, the implant proved to be biocompatible and successfully connected with nerves in just six weeks. Next steps? Testing brain activity to confirm restored sensory feedback, followed by trials in larger animals and eventually humans.

This innovation doesn’t just revolutionize dentistry. It could open the door to nerve-integrating implants in orthopedics and beyond.

I recently came across the excellent podcast 'The Next Regeneration' (cited below) and saw that there was an episode about 'The role of epigenetics in oral regeneration' with Dr. Fara As'ad. I thought, hey, my thesis paper was about epigenetics, let's listen to that! And I found out that the scientists who invented miRNAs were awarded the Nobel Prize for science in 2024. In 2015, I was lucky enough to publish an article with people that are much smarter than me in the medical journal 'Infection and Immunity' about the role of epigenetics and miRNAs in periodontal disease (cited below). At the time, epigenetics was a relatively new field, and it's quite remarkable that less than a decade later, it's recognized at the highest level!
