You can lower osteoarthritis risk by maintaining a healthy weight, getting daily physical activity, and avoiding high-impact activities, like running on hard surfaces and jumping, which can lead to a knee injury. Two out of every three obese people will develop osteoarthritis.
Injuries to the joints can develop osteoarthritis. Our joints can get injured by sudden movements, high impact movements, being overloaded, repetitive movements, and sustaining faulty position for a long time as well as bad posture and bad body mechanics.
According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Skin Diseases osteoarthritis, the condition is more common in older people.
Cold weather makes muscles and joints tense and causes pain in the arthritic joints. Cold does not cause arthritis.
Swimming, walking and many other low impact exercises, like stretching and low resistance training, can be done either supervised or at your own pace at home to decrease your osteoarthritis pain and prevent it from getting worse. Your physiotherapist can help you.
If your daily activities require you to bend, lift or carry objects, whether you are a construction worker, you do gardening, doing house works or sitting behind a desk for most of the day, ask your physiotherapist to teach you, the correct body mechanics.
