Jung believed we unconsciously project our own disowned qualities—both negative and sometimes positive—onto other people.

Therapy can help us to recognise defense mechanisms, understand their origins by exploring past experiences, and develop healthier coping mechanisms. This process increases self-awareness and self-acceptance, reducing the need to project those disowned parts of the self onto others.

The messages that we receive as children from the important adults in our life can shape our belief systems about ourselves and others. Maybe you learnt that people aren’t reliable, they may not have been there for you when it was most important, and were not capable of providing safety, love, and care when it is most needed.
If you are struggling with a destructive or distressing pattern and would like some help, please contact us.
We offer In-Person and Online Counselling.

Back-to-school anxiety is a real experience for both children and their parents or carers.

The transition back to school can be a stressful time, and you might notice your child feeling nervous about new routines, schoolwork, or friendships. It's important to understand that this anxiety is a normal part of returning to school and usually lessens over a few weeks.

However, if you observe significant emotional or behavioural changes in your child—such as stomach aches, fatigue, trouble sleeping, or isolating themselves—it may be helpful to discuss these feelings with them. You could also reach out to the school’s pastoral care team or their teacher for support.

Here are some tips to help support your child's return to school and manage their anxiety:

- Re-establish school routines, such as bedtimes, and prepare school bags and clothes in advance.
- Arrange a meet-up with their school friends before the term begins.
- Discuss any changes they might face, such as a new school or class, and talk about ways to navigate those changes.
- Plan the logistics for the first day, including drop-off arrangements and who they will travel to and from school with.

In addition, grounding techniques like deep breathing exercises or mindful walks can be beneficial to ease the transition together.

If you need more support, please feel free to contact us for an informal chat.

Riding the waves of depression:

"Depression can swiftly overtake you like the tide rolling in, its current pulling you out to sea. It is like drowning, like suffocating beneath the surface as the world goes on above you. The water muffles sound and slows your movements. There is only darkness below, and it threatens to swallow you whole. You feel the fluid rush between your fingers as you try to fight towards the surface. You long to breathe again, to hoist this heavy weight off your chest, alleviate this pressure in your lungs. Sometimes you want to give up... But I started to fight. I decided I would do all I could to try to ride out the waves of depression instead of drowning in them. (Charlie)

Counselling, Psychotherapy and Training Services

Past:

After spending many years working in the field of addictions, I became interested in the psychological interventions available to young people and adults; and began my counselling training in 1997. After qualifying I set up my own busy practice and have worked extensively for associated service providers such as local authorities, drug and alcohol services, mental health services, GP practices and educational services; both in managerial and clinical roles. Since 2004 I have managed specialised young peoples and adults drug services in the London Borough of Southwark and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and also supervised and led clinical services.

Having initially undertaken training in a Men’s Personal Development programme in 1997, I continued to explore this area, and trained extensively in working with men over a 20 year period. I have substantial experience of delivering programmes in the UK, Europe and Australia; and have been privileged to work with many of the leading facilitators in today’s world of men’s work.
