Overwhelming emotions get trapped inside each and every one of us. Grief, heartache, trauma the feeling of not knowing why we are here or why we are carrying on through this gift called life.
We feel guilty because we are adults and should by definition have all the answers. But what happens when we don’t? What happens when, as hard as we try we just can’t get out of that deep black hole that presents itself day after day. We mask it. We pretend it doesn't exist.
We bury our feelings deep and for short bursts we make it all go away through avoidance and distractions.
Each and every one of us has at some point used a distraction technique to mask the pain and emotional turmoil that we are feeling within. But it’s just a mask. A mask that is inhibiting ourselves from freedom. Freedom to live a life without pain and locked in emotion.
Any loss experienced whether it is a breakdown in a relationship, the death of someone close to you, loss of identity while being stuck in an unwanted situation can over time have a detrimental effect on our health and wellbeing. If we avoid the unhealthy emotions we are feeling and carrying on as if nothing is wrong then we run the risk of suffering a grief overload in life.
How can counselling help
A counsellor offers a safe environment in which you can talk through your thoughts feelings and emotions in the hope of gaining insight and awareness into what is stopping you from moving forward and living a happier life.
Working through the stages of grief, loss and anxiety will hopefully become a catalyst for growth. If grief is unresolved then the healing process won't begin and the same pain and emotions will keep replaying themselves over and over through our thoughts and actions.
It is only through the acceptance of our loss that we can begin to live a more balanced life.
