Lingua Cyprus

Lingua Cyprus Lingua Cyprus is dedicated to tailor-made individual and small group lessons for adults wanting to l Welcome to Lingua Cyprus.

My name is Samantha and I am English; however, I have spent half of my life overseas including 20 years in Greece and Cyprus. I have been teaching languages for almost 10 years now and have recently returned from the UK after obtaining a Master of Arts (MA) in Applied Linguistics from the University of Birmingham. My passion for languages began at a young age during my first summer working in Crete. I was fascinated by the curious alphabet on the road signs and the animated speech of the locals. It was there and then that I decided to start teaching myself Greek. I would sit for hours every evening with books, cassettes (maybe my younger students won't even remember these!), and helpful Cretan friends to try and learn as much Greek as I could. From there my passion also spread to TEFL (Teaching English as Foreign Language), Italian, and later to Russian. Having decided this was the career path that I wanted to follow, I studied to obtain formal qualifications including CELTA, DELTA, Certificate of Attainment in Modern Greek (C2), Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Linguistics (First Class Honours), and a Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics (Distinction). I am very passionate about teaching and ensure that no two lessons are the same. My aim is to enable you to communicate in the language regarding topics that are relevant to you and to ensure that everything we cover in the lesson will help you to achieve this. Although I use books as a reference tool to underpin the foundation of the lessons, there is no set syllabus that we must follow on a weekly basis. The lessons work because they are tailor-made for you. If you are nervous about taking the next step and contacting me about lessons, please be assured that I understand how you feel having been a student on many language courses. Whilst the thought of starting lessons may be daunting for you, I am confident that you will be very pleased that you did. Please take a look at the ‘Reviews’ where you will see that many of the students had similar concerns as you may have now regarding language learning. So whether you want to learn for fun, to challenge your brain, for employment purposes, to obtain qualifications, to make new friends, or to integrate more into Cypriot society, contact me today. We can arrange to have an informal chat to discuss your requirements and to book a free trial lesson with no obligation.

Καλό Δεκαπενταύγουστο!

August 15 or Dekapentavgoustos is one of the most important dates in the Greek Orthodox Calendar, as the Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos is celebrated. It is a national and religious holiday that marks the “falling asleep” repose or kimisis of Panagia, mother of Lord Jesus Christ. The Feast also commemorates the Assumption of the body of the Theotokos into heaven.
According to the Holy Scriptures, Christ was dying on the cross and saw His Mother and His disciple John. He said, “Woman, behold your son,” to John. From that moment Apostle John took care of Panagia at his home in Jerusalem.
Panagia was with the Holy Apostles on the day of Pentecost- a moveable feast that occurs 50 days after Pascha (Easter) and marks the descent of the Holy Spirit and the culmination of the Holy Trinity. All of the Apostles except Apostle Thomas were at Panagia’s bedside when she “fell asleep” and the Lord Jesus Christ came down and carried her soul to heaven.
The body of the Theotokos was laid in a tomb near the Garden of Gethsemane but the tomb was empty three days later when Apostle Thomas went to see her. The Assumption of the Theotokos (body) was later confirmed by an angel and an appearance she made in front of the Apostles.
Commemorating and preparing for the Dormition of the Theotokos in Greek Orthodox households begins on August 1, the beginning of Dekapentavgousto, with fasting. Paraklesis services are performed by most Greek Orthodox parishes worldwide in weekdays before the Feast, which consists of supplication and prayer for the intercessions of the Theotokos. A Great Vespers is held the evening before the Feast, and on the day of the Feast, it is celebrated with the Divine Liturgy of John Chrysostom in the morning.
Devout Greek Orthodox people make a pilgrimage to the Greek island of Tinos, where it is said Panagia made an appearance before a nun and told her where to find an icon of Panagia, which has healing properties. There are also huge celebrations held at Panagia Soumela in Mount Vermio, Panagia Ekatontapyliani in Paros.
Today, every Greek church across Greece and the entire world will be holding some form of commemoration for Panagia, Mother of all.

UPDATE**** A wonderful couple on holiday have decided to adopt this little boy. He is going to a foster home today when he leaves the vets and will be flying to the UK in a couple of months. I’m so happy and grateful ☺️ 🙏🙏😻

This little boy has found his way to, or been dumped at our feeding station. He is about 7 weeks old and is crying out for his mum. I have been monitoring him several times a day since he appeared on Tuesday and there is no sign of a mother or any other kittens.

He really needs a home as he is lost and quite distressed. Can anyone offer this beautiful boy a home? We will get him checked by the vet and pay for his neutering when he is old enough. In return, you’ll get lots of love and cuddles. Please contact me if you are interested. ❤️😻🤞
