How do I need to do before my scan?
1. We advise to drink 1-2 glasses of water and to NOT empty the bladder at least ONE hour before your appointment. In the first trimester this is particularly important.
2. You can and should eat before the scan so that the baby has energy to move. It can help to have a chocolate with you.
3. Do not use any creams or oils on the abdomen for 4 days before the scan.
4. Our first and foremost concern is for mothers to be comfortable, so just wear your comfy clothes and let's discuss all your concerns.

That dark line running down the center of your belly is called the 'linea nigra'.
It's a common and natural occurrence during pregnancy, caused by hormonal changes that increase the pigmentation in your skin. Don't worry, the linea nigra usually fades after delivery; but it's a unique mark of your pregnancy journey and you should love it either way.

By the end of the second trimester, baby hair starts growing. For some babies, this hair will cover their head, while for others it might be just a few wisps. Both are perfectly normal and adorable and you’ll get to see your baby’s unique look at birth!

Unfortunately, no. Prenatal scans can show your baby's development, movements, and even facial features, but they cannot reveal eye color. The color of your baby's eyes will only be visible after birth, and even then, it can change over the first year of life. So, just be patient.

The cervix is the lower part of the uterus that opens into the va**na. During pregnancy, it remains closed and firm to protect the baby, gradually softening and opening during labor to allow for childbirth.

The uterine arteries are major blood vessels that supply blood to the uterus and placenta. They are crucial for providing the baby with oxygen and nutrients, supporting their growth and development. Healthy blood flow through these arteries is essential for a healthy pregnancy.

Regular prenatal check-ups help monitor the health of your cervix and uterine arteries, ensuring a safe pregnancy journey. Consult your doctor for more.

Preterm birth occurs before completing 37 weeks of pregnancy. It is an important factor of neonatal and long term morbidity and mortality, affecting 5-9% of births in Europe and 12-13% in the US.

It's the primary cause of perinatal mortality worldwide. Factors include: whether it is a single or a multiple pregnancy, medical history, ethnicity, body weight, infections, smoking, alcohol, co***ne use, and complications like preeclampsia or gestational diabetes.

The severity varies:
Less than 28 weeks: very serious (5%)
28-31 weeks: severe (15%)
31-34 weeks: moderate (20%)
34-37 weeks: mild (60%)

Ideally a baby should be born after 30 weeks, be greater than 2kg to minimise the risk of needing an incubator, and after 34 weeks to optimise lung maturation (the lungs start to produce surfactant, a fluid that reduces surface tension within the lungs and helps baby take that first breath). Steroid injections to the mother play a role in prematurity given 48 hours before birth - they promote this lung maturation process.

Immediate risks for babies include neurological, respiratory, gastrointestinal, and metabolic issues. Long-term complications like neurodevelopmental delays, vision or hearing problems, epilepsy, and cardiovascular diseases may arise.

An important cause of premature birth is cervical insufficiency, where the cervix (the neck of the womb that keeps baby inside) is short of the gestational age. This is assessed carefully both at the first and the second trimester scans. Treatments such as progesterone pessaries or cervical cerclage work well when introduced in time. Multiple pregnancy responds less well to these treatments. Prematurity in multiple pregnancy is therefore an important risk factor for these pregnancies.

Prevention strategies include maintaining a healthy lifestyle, quitting smoking, managing weight, treating infections, and cervical length measurement as described.

Awareness and proactive care during pregnancy are crucial in mitigating the risks associated with preterm birth. Consult with your doctor for more!

Staying active during pregnancy can benefit both mom and the baby, but safety is key.

Consult your doctor before starting or continuing any exercise routine as it may not be the ideal for pregnancy purposes. It is better to choose low-impact activities like walking or swimming, and to avoid high-risk sports or activities. Prenatal yoga with pelvic floor exercises and breathing techniques will also aid for labor preparation.
You always need to listen to your body and adjust the intensity as needed. Aim for moderate exercise, that will not cause any exhaustion and stop immediately if you experience dizziness, chest pain, va**nal bleeding, or contractions.
Incorporate pelvic floor exercises and breathing techniques for labor preparation.

Keeping an active lifestyle even during pregnancy offers both mental and physical benefits, always in moderation and in consultation with your doctor.
