🧘 King Mongkut was the first monarch to allow common people, including foreigners, to attend his coronation ceremony.

He also hosted the first New Year’s reception at the royal palace, inviting most of the foreign residents living in Bangkok.

King Mongkut introduced many “firsts” in Siam’s history:
he launched the country’s first official newspaper, the Royal Gazette, built the first real road in Bangkok — Charoen Krung Road (“New Road”) in 1861, issued Siam’s first round coins and paper banknotes in 1853, and established the country’s customs department and city police.

He was also the first Siamese king to issue a royal decree banning the distribution of o***m — the first decree ever printed and publicly distributed for citizens.

During his reign, European companies — primarily British — made the first foreign investments in Siam’s economy: sugar production in Nakhon Chai Si, teak logging in the north, and gemstone mining in the eastern provinces of Chanthaburi and Pailin.

🧘King Rama IV was the first Siamese monarch who not only spoke and wrote fluently in English and Latin, but also understood the need for flexible diplomacy in the face of new political realities. In 1852, breaking with the old traditions of Siamese diplomacy, King Mongkut sent personal letters to Emperor Napoleon III of France and Pope Pius IX. In 1857, he dispatched the first Siamese embassy to the United Kingdom to pay respects to Queen Victoria. The embassy, representing King Mongkut, was solemnly received by Queen Victoria on November 19, 1857. On their return journey, the delegates visited Paris, where they were received with equal ceremony by Emperor Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie.

🧘 On April 3, 1851, King Rama III died. There is a legend that during his coronation in 1824, he took the royal crown from the hands of the High Brahmin, but did not place it on his head. He handed it over to the princes, members of the Council of Succession, with the proposal to keep it for Prince Mongkut, the legitimate heir to the royal throne, and to consider him only as the locum tenens of this throne. Whether this is true or not, but on his deathbed, Rama III did not name any of his 22 sons as a possible heir, and the day after his death, Prince Mongkut emerged from the monastery and was proclaimed King of Siam, who went down in history as Rama IV (1851-1868).
