🧘 King Mongkut was the first monarch to allow common people, including foreigners, to attend his coronation ceremony.
He also hosted the first New Year’s reception at the royal palace, inviting most of the foreign residents living in Bangkok.
King Mongkut introduced many “firsts” in Siam’s history:
he launched the country’s first official newspaper, the Royal Gazette, built the first real road in Bangkok — Charoen Krung Road (“New Road”) in 1861, issued Siam’s first round coins and paper banknotes in 1853, and established the country’s customs department and city police.
He was also the first Siamese king to issue a royal decree banning the distribution of o***m — the first decree ever printed and publicly distributed for citizens.
During his reign, European companies — primarily British — made the first foreign investments in Siam’s economy: sugar production in Nakhon Chai Si, teak logging in the north, and gemstone mining in the eastern provinces of Chanthaburi and Pailin.
