A recipe for social health: How link workers can change the face of primary healthcare in Europe 🌍👩⚕️
When we think about prescriptions, we usually imagine pills. But what if your doctor could "prescribe" a gardening club, yoga class, or art workshop instead? That's the idea behind social prescribing – a growing movement that connects medicine with everyday life.
A new study protocol published in Advances in Clinical and Experimental Medicine by Wroclaw Medical University explores how this approach could reshape primary healthcare across Europe. The focus? Link workers – people who guide patients toward community resources that support their health and wellbeing.
👥 Why do link workers matter?
Because telling a patient "join a support group" is easy. Helping them actually find one, take the first step, and stick with it is the hard part. Link workers:
– know local initiatives,
– support patients in choosing activities,
– help turn social prescriptions into real life changes.
📊 The project uses the Delphi method – bringing together ~60 experts from across Europe to define best practices:
– Who benefits most from social prescribing?
– How should success be measured?
– What qualifications should link workers have?
The stakes are high. Europe faces rising rates of chronic illness, loneliness, and mental health challenges. Social prescribing could:
➡️ reduce health inequalities,
➡️ ease the burden on healthcare systems,
➡️ strengthen social ties.
From Poland, Prof. Donata Kurpas (Wroclaw Medical University) joins the team, adding a national perspective to this international effort.
