If they don´t like an exercise I give them another one. And I follow their lead in play. I teach people movements to help them improve. Movement, especially organised, rhythmic movement can help organise the brain. So I teach people of all ages how to do a programme of movements (we call them activities) to do daily at home. In other words I don´t train people to read or talk etc. I help their ner
vous system develop so that they can learn reading and talking more easily. A big part of this is getting to know the adult or the child, so I can see how best he or she likes to learn, play, interact...this way I can tailor my work to the individual. We all learn differently. We all have moments when we are ready to learn and other moments when we are not ready. Doing the activities when the person is ready can make a huge difference. It can also be helpful to look for these right moments to start a conversation, teach something or playing together. It is important not pressure children to do their program of activities. If they do not like an activity, I simply look for an alternative which is more interesting, motivating and hopefully fun. :-)
HANDLE® is a neuro-developmental approach, which is based on the plasticity of the brain and the role of stress on social and academic learning. It can help those who want to improve their balance, their memory, their speech or their sleep. It can help them concentrate more, be calmer, deal with anxiety, tolerate hair or face washing, nail cutting and so on as well as be less hyperactive. As part of the individual activity programmes I create for people, I tell them about the signs that the nervous system is overloaded so that they can avoid overwhelm and make faster progress. These programmes typically take about 20-30 minutes a day. They also can include tips on dealing with tantrums, diet or staying calm when you child is not co-operating. I teach HANDLE Institute approved courses, levels 1 and 2, for parents and professionals. These courses include some activities and some guiding principles on how to notice the best times to do activities, when to stop and how to vary them to suit the individual. I also cover what it can mean when your child is not complying, why children might be doing unusual behaviour or how to do HANDLE in schools or other settings.
