Have you ever damaged your eyes from the sun? Today we’re sharing what to do if it happens to you. 👀

You probably know that harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun can damage not only your skin but also your eyes. 🫣 All it takes is skipping your sunglasses and spending too long looking into the sun or exposing your eyes to UV rays reflected off sand or water and you might end up with photokeratitis: a type of eye damage caused by UV exposure. 🤷‍♀️

This kind of “sunburn” affects mainly the cornea and usually heals within a few days. But it can be very painful and just like with sunburned skin, you might not notice the symptoms until the damage is already done. 😓

Common signs include:
❌Eye and head pain
❌ Blurred vision
❌ A gritty or sandy feeling in the eyes
❌ Sensitivity to bright light
❌ Constricted pupils
❌ Eyelid twitching
❌ Red, watery, or swollen eyes
❌ In rare cases, temporary vision loss 😵‍💫

The good news? Photokeratitis usually heals on its own. Here’s what you can do in the meantime to ease the discomfort: 👇
✅ Remove your contact lenses if you're wearing any
✅ Use lubricating eye drops (a.k.a. artificial tears)
✅ Rest your eyes in a dark or dimly lit room
✅ Take over-the-counter pain relievers
✅ Apply a cold compress to your closed eyes (a cloth soaked in cold water works great)
✅ Avoid rubbing your eyes

❗If symptoms don’t improve after a few days, or if they feel especially severe, it's best to consult an eye doctor.

💧🏖️ Swimming and contact lenses? Better not! Summer is perfect for a dip in the pool, a swim at the lake, or a splash in the sea. But if you wear contact lenses, be careful, water and contacts don’t mix well. Here’s why 👇

❌ Risk of infection
Even crystal-clear water can contain bacteria and microorganisms that easily get trapped under your lenses and lead to irritation or infection.

❌ Lost lenses
Waves, diving, or jumping into the water – your lens can shift or fall out completely. And finding it in the water? Mission impossible. 😅

❌ Irritated eyes
Chlorine, salt, and other impurities in water can irritate your eyes on their own. Combined with contacts, it puts even more strain on them.

✅ So, what can you do?
If swimming without contacts isn’t an option, opt for daily disposable lenses and wear swimming goggles. And always throw the lenses away immediately after your swim!

🔍 Thinking About Laser Eye Surgery? Here’s What You Need to Know! If you’re also on the fence about whether it’s time to ditch your glasses – whether for comfort, looks, cost, or simply because wearing them feels like a hassle – read on to find out what you should know before undergoing laser eye surgery. 🧐

1⃣ Not everyone is a suitable candidate 👇
Key factors include your age, overall health, and any pathological conditions of the eye. The minimum age for surgery is 18, with no upper age limit. Your vision must also be stable – meaning your prescription hasn’t changed for at least a year. 👀

2⃣ A preoperative exam is a must 👇
Just like with any surgery, a thorough pre-op examination is necessary. This includes a full ocular history, accurate measurement of your vision prescription, as well as checking the curvature and thickness of your cornea and your intraocular pressure. Since eye drops are used to dilate your pupils, your vision will be temporarily blurred – so it’s advised not to drive afterwards. ☝️

3⃣ The procedure is completely painless 👇
Although you’ll be awake during the surgery, numbing drops are applied to the eye, making the procedure completely painless. 😉 Healing is usually quick and not particularly uncomfortable – depending on the method used. Some patients may temporarily experience dry eyes, light sensitivity, or mild discomfort. These symptoms are short-lived and typically disappear within a few hours or days.

What about showering with contact lenses? 🤔 Most optometrists and eye doctors agree that swimming or showering with contact lenses is not ideal.

The best option is not to wear contact lenses in the shower at all. 👀 If you do keep them in, the moisture can cause the lens to stick to your eye, making it harder to remove than usual. What should you do in that case? 😯 Wait about 20 minutes and then try removing the lens again.

If you still decide to shower with your lenses in, be careful not to get water or shampoo in your eyes. 🫣 Tap water contains chlorine, minerals, and metal particles that can damage the lenses or even change their shape. After coming into contact with regular water, the lenses might feel uncomfortable and irritate your eyes.

🫧 Do you shower with your lenses in, or do you prefer to take them out? Share with us in the comments! 👇

Is laser eye surgery cheaper than glasses and contact lenses? 🤔💰 It might surprise you, but yes – it is. While it’s a bigger one-time investment, in the long run, it actually pays off. 👍 Not only because of the improved vision, but also from a financial point of view. Many of our patients say that laser eye surgery is one of the best investments they’ve ever made. 💁‍♂️

We understand that the price may seem high at first glance. But when you compare it to how often you buy new frames, lenses with special coatings, regular service, or how frequently you purchase contact lenses and accessories like cleaning solutions, the cost of surgery is significantly lower than the long-term expenses of vision aids. 🤓

So how do you look at the cost of laser eye surgery? Is it the main factor for you, or do you prefer to pay more for better long-term results? 🙂

And if you're seriously considering laser eye surgery, here’s some great news – we offer it starting at €501 per eye. 👁️‍🗨️ You can find all the details here👇 https://www.refrakcnicentrum.cz/en/laser-eye-surgery/

Maybe now is the perfect time to say goodbye to glasses for good. 💙

👁️ What to expect during your first visit to a specialized eye clinic? 👁️

If you're planning your first appointment with an eye specialist, we understand you might feel a bit nervous. But don’t worry – you’re in good hands with us! 🤝

🔍 What’s in store for you?
During a comprehensive eye exam, we’ll perform several tests to evaluate the current condition of your vision. The entire process is painless, thorough, and typically takes between 1.5 to 2 hours.

Here’s what you can expect:
▪️ Health interview – We'll ask about your medical and family history, as well as any vision issues you may be experiencing.
▪️ Visual acuity test – We’ll check how well you see both up close and at a distance and determine the exact level of any refractive error.
▪️ Intraocular pressure measurement – This test checks the pressure inside your eyes to assess your risk for glaucoma.
▪️ Retina and cornea exam – Using advanced diagnostic tools like OCT and Pentacam.
▪️ Tear production test – We’ll see how well your eyes produce tears and whether you may be dealing with dry eyes.
▪️ Examination of the anterior and posterior segments of the eye – A full check-up of your overall eye health.

📋 To help us provide the best care possible, we recommend bringing:
▪️ Your ID or another form of identification
▪️ A list of any medications you are currently taking, and any relevant medical reports
▪️ All pairs of glasses you currently use

📝 How to prepare for your visit?
▪️ If you wear contact lenses, we recommend not wearing them for 3 days prior to the exam.
▪️ Your vision may be slightly blurry for 2–3 hours after the exam, so please avoid driving yourself home.

✨ Our motto: Prevention is key!
Regular visits to your eye specialist are important not only to maintain good vision, but also to detect potential eye conditions early – even those that show no immediate symptoms.

If you have any concerns or questions, our specialists will be happy to explain everything clearly and make sure your eyes are taken care of with the utmost attention and care. 💙

What causes excessive tearing and how is it treated? 😢 We believe this has happened to almost everyone at some point - eyes full of tears that just won’t stop. The most common cause, along with eye irritation, is the body's natural attempt to flush out harmful substances or foreign particles from the eye. These may include: 👇

▪ Eye injuries, foreign bodies or dust particles
▪ Chemical substances like smoke or fumes
▪ Infectious or allergic conjunctivitis

😭 But excessive tearing can also be triggered by other causes, such as: 👇
▪ Dry eye syndrome
▪ Allergies, including seasonal pollen allergy (hay fever)
▪ Blockage or other issues with the Meibomian glands in the eyelids
▪ Inflammation of the cornea
▪ Sinus infections
▪ Styes or chalazion
▪ Side effects of certain medications

How is excessive tearing treated? 🧑‍⚕️
The key is to treat the underlying condition that’s causing the problem. Infections are treated with antibiotics, dry eyes with artificial tears, and blocked tear ducts may require surgery.

If your tearing is accompanied by vision changes, eye pain or swelling, the feeling of something stuck in your eye, or persistent redness - don’t hesitate to see a doctor. ☝️

Has someone told you that your eyes aren’t “suitable” for laser surgery? Don’t worry. 👁️👉 For clients who aren’t good candidates for laser eye surgery (due to very high prescriptions or thin corneas, for example), we offer another – and truly great – option: phakic lens implantation.

✅ A safe and painless procedure
✅ Permanent correction of even extremely high prescriptions
✅ Quick return to your normal life

A phakic lens is a tiny miracle, about the size of a contact lens, that’s placed directly inside your eye – and stays there so you don’t have to deal with glasses or contacts ever again.
