When I was 41, I was told I was in early menopause.

My cycle disappeared.
My FSH was extremely high.

Over time, my cycle returned.

One of the biggest problems I see in fertility after 40?

Women moving into treatment without a full investigation into what may actually be standing in the way of pregnancy.

These are some of the most basic, foundational labs and tests I review with clients:

✔ Progesterone (6–8 DPO)
✔ Full thyroid panel (TSH, free T3, reverse T3, free T4, antibodies)
✔ Fasting insulin + A1C
✔ Inflammation (hs-CRP, homocysteine)
✔ Vitamin D
✔ Iron status (ferritin + iron panel)
✔ Vaginal microbiome
✔ Gut microbiome
✔ Full semen analysis + DNA fragmentation

And yet many women have never had several of these evaluated properly.

This is not a complete fertility workup. It’s the foundation.

But these pieces alone can completely change the direction of a fertility journey and uncover issues that are often missed in conventional fertility care.

Cortisol is one of the most overlooked hormones in fertility.

It can be elevated even when you don’t feel particularly stressed.

When cortisol remains high, it can interfere with ovulation, lower progesterone, disrupt thyroid function, destabilize blood sugar, increase inflammation, and negatively affect egg quality.

This becomes even more important in your 40s, when cortisol tends to rise and your body becomes less resilient to poor sleep, chronic stress, and overdoing it.

This was a major part of my own fertility journey.

I had my sons at 44 and 46, and learning how to shift from fear and hypervigilance to safety, trust, and gratitude was one of the most important changes I made.

Simple daily habits can make a profound difference:

✔ Protect your sleep (7-9 hours)
✔ Balance your blood sugar
✔ Eat enough protein (≈100g)
✔ Strength train appropriately
✔ Walk after meals
✔ Set better boundaries
✔ Make time for joy
✔ Practice gratitude and meditation

Your body needs to feel safe before it fully prioritizes reproduction.

Many women assume that once perimenopause begins, pregnancy is no longer possible.

That simply isn’t true.

If you are still ovulating, you can still get pregnant.

The challenge is that ovulation often becomes less predictable, so timing and overall health matter even more.

Look for signs that ovulation is approaching:

✔ Raw egg white cervical mucus
✔ A positive LH test

The best time to have s*x is the days you notice fertile mucus, the day before ovulation, and the day of ovulation.

During perimenopause, supporting your body becomes especially important. Optimizing nutrition, blood sugar, sleep, stress, and inflammation can have a profound impact on both egg quality and hormone balance.

Perimenopause does not mean it is too late.

It means your body may need more support.

Before I conceived at 43 and 46, the first thing I changed was my home environment.

Not my supplements.
Not my workouts.

My daily exposures.

The research shows:

Chemicals like phthalates, bisphenols, PFAS, parabens, and pesticides act as endocrine disruptors.

They interfere with hormone signaling, increase oxidative stress, and are linked to reduced egg quality, lower s***m quality, and poorer reproductive outcomes.

After 40, this matters even more.
Your body doesn’t clear toxins as efficiently, so the cumulative load starts to build, and that directly impacts fertility.

The good news is you don’t need to change everything.

Start with the things you use every day:

• Drink filtered water and avoid plastic bottles
• Store food in glass instead of plastic
• Choose organic when possible
• Read labels—avoid “fragrance” or “parfum” (this applies to personal care, beauty, candles, detergents, and cleaning products)
• Use simple cleaning products like vinegar and baking soda
• Don’t wear shoes in your home
• Open your windows regularly (indoor air can be significantly more polluted than outdoor air)

These small changes add up quickly.
