Foundations of Ashtanga vinyasa yoga – Studio Universe
Ashtanga vinyasa yoga traces its roots back to the earliest known forms of physical yoga (hatha yoga) as first reintroduced in modern times by Sri Tirumalai Krishnamacharya and later codified into a comprehensive series of poses and introduced to the west by Sri K. Ashtanga vinyasa yoga is a dynamic form of physical yoga which, when practice
d properly and with dedication, will build strength, flexibility and improve one’s overall health. Foundations of Ashtanga vinyasa yoga at Studio Universe is designed to teach students the key elements of the Ashtanga vinyasa yoga system by connecting yoga poses and transitions between poses with the breath. This foundations class leads students through a wide range of traditionally practiced poses (asana) with specific descriptions of the proper physical alignment for each pose as well as the specific breathing pattern (pranayama). Careful adjustments throughout the practice help to ensure that students are performing poses correctly. Lessons offer a broad context of the art of yoga and include descriptions of muscle function for the various poses in order for students to develop the skills and knowledge to practice properly in order to get the maximum benefits from the practice and to avoid injury. Classes aim to help students develop their own personal practices and are appropriate for a variety of levels. Reasonably good physical condition is a plus when beginning a yoga practice, however anyone with motivation to develop a personal yoga practice can benefit and anyone is welcome to attend.
