Tomorrow is the last day to watch this great film via this free stream. As I watched I made a few notes and share them here in English for my international friends and playmates:
Gabor Maté (25:11 min): “Infants when their brains are developing, if there`s stress around them they`ll tune out. That`s how they survive. But the tuning out gets programmed in their brains. Bing - they are diagnosed with ADHD. `Not enough dopamine, let`s give you Ritaline`” --- unfortunatelly I know this story as well from my playmates...
(31:41): “There`s an important chemical called dopamine. Dopamine is essential for motivation and attention. You take infant monkeys and you measure their dopamine levels in the front part of the brain and you find it to be normal. Separate them from their mothers? Those dopamine levels have diminished. In other words child`s brain chemistry is affected by the unavailability of the mother. And this is true even if the mother is physically there but emotionally absent.”
(46:05): “These people then develop life-long patterns of self-suppression which then suppresses the immune system as well. Because the immune system and the emotional system are the same. Not even controversial.”
(50:36min): “If you look at addicts [...] what`s missing is sufficient activation in part of the brain`s reward motivation circuitry of which dopamine is an important driver biochemically. Co***ne elevates dopamine levels. Ni****ne elevates dopamine levels." etc. --- What is great news is that physical activity elevates dopamine levels. And touch in safe environment (as play-touch is) elevates oxytocin together with dopamine and serotonin as well! Just need to play more. Simple :-)
(1:21:56): “[Love is] above all a constant seeking to understand the other. [Bernard W. Bail continues:] When a baby is understood that baby is loved. When the mother puts the baby to the breast and the baby`s hungry that baby is loved. When the mother picks the baby up and holds it and pats it and that`s what the baby wanted, the baby is loved. Being understood is being loved.” --- When playing one can feel understood. Profoundly, deeply understood with an understanding that goes beyond reasoning and logic. To play means being understood as a living being.
