Copper is an essential trace element that plays a role in numerous important processes in the human body. It acts as a cofactor in various enzymes and other proteins and is therefore crucial for many metabolic reactions.

In addition, copper plays an important role in the nervous system and is involved in the formation and maintenance of myelin, the protective sheath surrounding nerve fibres.

We recently had the pleasure of taking part in FI Asia, one of the leading events bringing together the Asian food & beverage industry. It was a fantastic opportunity to:

The natural menstrual cycle consists of menstruation, the follicular phase, and the luteal phase. During menstruation, symptoms like cramps, various kinds of pain, and discomfort often occur. But even shortly before menstruation in the luteal phase, the Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) can be accompanied by mood swings, sleep disorders, tiredness, fatigue, and anxiety.
Micronutrients play a significant role in diverse biological processes and important body functions. During menstruation heavy blood losses can increase the risk for iron deficiency. * During the female cycle, an adequate supply of certain micronutrients is therefore especially important. Iron, vitamin B12 and folate contribute to normal blood formation, while vitamin C increases iron absorption.

Recent studies have investigated the functions of micronutrients 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗮 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 ,*:

𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻’𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗮 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄, 𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀
Globally, it is estimated that two in three women of reproductive age are affected by at least one micronutrient deficiency.* The most common deficiencies include vitamin D, folate, iron, iodine, zinc and magnesium. Untreated deficiencies can lead to unspecific symptoms such as fatigue, anemia, reduced productivity and mood disturbances. Over time, more specific health issues may arise.

Here are some of the health concern women may face in their life, some especially during their reproductive years:

1. Women are at higher risk of 𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘀 than men. Their lifetime risk of experiencing a fracture is estimated to be between 40 and 50 percent.**
2. 𝗧𝗵𝘆𝗿𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝗱𝘆𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 is also more common in women. They are nearly five times more likely to develop thyroid disease than men.***
3. 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 are another concern. Around 50 to 60 percent of adult women will experience at least one UTI in their lifetime, and up to 30 percent will have a recurrence within 6 to 12 months.****
4. 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝘆𝗰𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗢𝘃𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗲, 𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗖𝗢𝗦, is a complex endocrine disorder. It affects between 5 and 10 percent of women of reproductive age worldwide and can lead to hormonal imbalances, metabolic changes and fertility challenges.*****

Micronutrient deficiencies are often overlooked, yet their impact on women's health and overall wellbeing can be far-reaching. Nevertheless, further research is still needed in many areas of women's health, especially with regard to micronutrients, in order to draw clearer conclusions.
