We are proud of having obtained in the more than 70 years of our existence an excellent reputation in Europe and the world for being a neurological specialist clinic and a forerunner in Neurological Rehabilitation. About 14 000 patients with neurological diseases and injuries seek to be cured in our clinics each year. We consider this figure as a confirmation of the patients’ great confidence in our work. The vast majority of the patients are from Germany, but in the past few years we have received more and more special enquiries from abroad.

Our special Arabic lunch – a taste of home💐

Last Friday, we invited our international patients and their accompanying family members to a very special Arabic lunch at Kliniken Schmieder Heidelberg. ✨
The buffet filled the room not only with delicious smells and flavours, but also with smiles, warmth and heartfelt conversations. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet, exchange cultures, and create a sense of togetherness – far away from home and yet feeling at home.🥰
A big thank you to everyone who attended and made this day so special.🫶

Learning to walk safely – with the Vector System
----------------
At Kliniken Schmieder, we use cutting-edge technology to support neurological rehabilitation – including the innovative Vector Gait Training System.
The Vector system helps patients take their first steps after conditions such as stroke or spinal cord injury. It enables safe, intensive training without the risk of falling – while still allowing maximum freedom of movement.
Thanks to its electronically controlled harness and support system, therapy can take place at the patient’s personal performance limit. This allows for faster and more sustainable recovery – and makes effective training possible even for those dealing with fear, instability, or limited mobility.
Smart sensors adapt to each person’s individual potential, helping to improve gait and regain independence in everyday life.
Water for therapeutic purpos
---------
Hydrotherapy plays an important role in neurological rehabilitation – it offers relief and opens up new movement possibilities through water treatments such as Kneipp affusions or therapeutic baths.
Its benefits can be felt quickly and can support a variety of conditions, including:
• Pain
• Circulatory disorders
• Sleep disorders
• Poor circulation
• Respiratory problems
In the therapy pool, the buoyancy of the water reduces the strain on the body, making movement easier and often pain-free. At the same time, the water provides gentle resistance – perfect for improving strength, endurance and coordination.

Technology that opens new paths
-------
At one of our clinics, we recently had the chance to test an innovative mobility aid: the Scewo stair-climbing wheelchair. One of our therapists took the device for a spin to assess its safety, stability, and ease of use – and some of our patients also got to try it out. ♿
The Scewo wheelchair is designed to give people with mobility impairments more independence and open up new possibilities in everyday life. Obstacles like stairs – once seen as impossible – can now be overcome safely and confidently.
Thanks to the collaboration with Scewo and Sanitätshaus Carstens for making it possible to experience this promising innovation in practice. It gives us hope – for more participation, more freedom of movement, and a life with fewer barriers. 👍

Powerful support on the way back to walking: Lyra gait trainer
-----------
For many patients undergoing neurological rehabilitation, one goal stands above all others: learning to walk again. At Kliniken Schmieder THERA-Trainer Lyra is an important partner on this journey.
This advanced device replicates natural gait patterns and is individually adjustable to each patient’s abilities– even when walking capacity is severely limited. It enables intensive training at the limits of personal performance, with high repetitions and tailored intensity to boost recovery.
In early stages of rehabilitation, the Lyra helps activate muscle memory and lays the foundation for independent walking. Combined with innovative technology, targeted therapy concepts, and the dedicated support of our therapists, it becomes a true ally on the path to a more self-determined life

The Kliniken Schmieder are one of the world leading Neurological Rehabilitation clinics with many medical experts. We treat neurological patients of all degrees of severity and in all stages of acute and rehabilitative recovery. We thus provide the complete chain of Neurological Rehabilitation one-stop, throughout all stages of the neurological phase model (Phase A to Phase F).
Our story began in 1950, when Prof. Dr. Friedrich Schmieder founded the first clinic in Gailingen on the High-Rhine. Nowadays, he is considered a pioneer and forerunner in the field of Neurological Rehabilitation. Early on, Prof. Schmieder was convinced that professional and intensive treatment, even a long time after the brain-injuring incident, could improve the neurological performance. His assumption turned out to be true, as modern neurological research proves.
Further clinics followed: Allensbach in 1974, Konstanz in 1994, in 1995 our day clinic in Stuttgart, 1998 Stuttgart-Gerlingen and 2001 in Heidelberg. Large extension buildings opened in Gerlingen in 2009 and 2011 in Heidelberg.
Since 1950 Kliniken Schmieder has been persistent in its goal of providing neurological patients with the best possible treatment. Annually, 1 800 employees in our six clinics (Gailingen, Allensbach, Konstanz, Stuttgart, Gerlingen, Heidelberg) all over Baden-Württemberg are treating over 14 000 neurological patients. The six different clinics are strongly interconnected, but offer different medical emphases.
In order to promote the further development of our employees, the clinic has set up a teaching institute (ZENITH) in 1991 where therapists, doctors and nurses are trained in continuing education and professional development courses.
In 1997, the Lurija Institute for rehabilitation and health sciences was founded in a joint venture of Kliniken Schmieder and the University of Constance. Since then, numerous research projects on Neurological Rehabilitation have resulted from this cooperation. Our Lurija Institute generates important stimuli for research and thus develops new therapy strategies for our patients. In addition to working with the University of Constance, Kliniken Schmieder is involved in numerous research-cooperations with the Universities of Freiburg, Heidelberg, Tübingen, Mannheim and Magdeburg.
Our family-run establishment has actively helped to shape the history of Neurological Rehabilitation and has set new medical and therapeutic standards and impulses. Our goal is to support our patients and - if possible - to try to bring them back into their old or a new working environment.
