Artificial Intelligence (AI) to fight the pandemic? Whether it’s about the development of new vaccines or the management of patients - AI could be an important tool in the fight against COVID. Our Medical Director Prof. Dr. Diehm talks about these aspects in his newest article in the German online magazine “Handelsblatt”.

The last few months have shown a lot of movement as far as AI goes: Researchers at the University of Augsburg developed a smartphone app that predicts a COVID infection based on changes in one’s voice and one’s breathing.

AI also plays a major role in the development of new vaccines: Curevac based in Tübingen has built many competencies over the last few months and started to work with these technologies early on.

So while COVID can make us sick, it also mobilized enormous creative powers that will help us deal with similar threats in the future.

Today is International Nurses Day - time to say „Thank you“!

About 1.7 million people are working in nursing in Germany; of those about 1.1 million people work in healthcare and about 0.6 million people in geriatric nursing. Especially now we want to thank these people who - despite the extraordinary and difficult situation at hand for over a year - take care of our fellow humans daily.

At Max Grundig Clinic, our nurses team cares daily with empathy, patience and attentiveness for our patients. What makes their job special is to care for the patients’ wellbeing, support the patients, care for them medically and accompany them gracefully.

A few habits never hurt. Why healthy habits keep us fit and healthy for a long time.

The pandemic turns out to be a challenging test for all of us. Our office day got exchanged for remote work at home, the daily drive to work is replaced by a few steps into the next room, and extended breaks with colleagues have now turned into quick snacks by yourself. Our day to day life has always been ruled by rituals that now in the pandemic cannot always take place anymore. However, healthy rituals, no matter how small or insignificant are a great opportunity for us to stay fit - physically and mentally. They are important coordinates of our days, they stabilize and magically serve as support and orientation.

Even after a Covid infection, some patients continue to suffer from symptoms. These lingering symptoms give reason for discussion among leading medical experts.
The pandemic is still too young to give definite, scientifically supported answers as to how massive long covid or the post-covid-syndrome really are.
Studies from England and Switzerland come up with different answers regarding continuing symptoms after a covid infection. In many places, there are special clinics now dealing with just these patients and their symptoms.
Other experts, however, argue that these patients simply deal with CFS, chronic fatigue syndrome which is known to appear after many virus infections.
Jeremy Devine, a psychiatrist at McMaster University in Ontario warned for example to not come to early and unspecific conclusions. He pointed out that in history, theses about secondary conditions often had to be withdrawn due to lack of scientific evidence.
So the jury is still out as to whether there really is something such as long covid.

Chronic heartburn is bothersome and can also be very uncomfortable. Reflux, as it is also called, is the cause for diseases of the esophagus in more than 50% of the time and can also be the cause for esophageal cancer. If you suffer from heartburn over a longer period of time, you should let doctors perform a visual inspection of the esophagus as well as the stomach. You can also do something for yourself with the following behavior:

Keep your BMI at a healthy level (between 18.5 and 25)
Drink lots of warm water
Stay active between 30 - 45 minutes a day
Eat smaller portions
Don’t smoke
Little amounts of sugar
Sleep on your left side

Time to strengthen the immune system - with Vitamin C, for example.

Vitamin C is the most effective antioxidant. It prevents build-up of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Oral effectiveness, however, is very limited due to its half-life period. In a medical setting, Vitamin C is usually given as infusion in order to sustainably increase the intracellular concentration and to use its antiviral and antitumoral characteristics. If you’d like to boost your Vitamin C intake naturally, press 1-2 lemons a day.

An article in the current edition of the German magazine “Der Spiegel” is titled “How homeoffice destroys us”, and Dr. Graz, head physician of our Psychosomatics department at Mac Grundig Clinic, also added his opinion on the topic.

“Patients are caught in a vicious cycle of fear for their existence, imminent signs of catastrophes and sleep issues.” High-level managers usually fear for the future of their company, whereas lower-level employees deal with stress and work overload and are afraid to get infected.

Often, mental health issues cannot be seen - by society or the employer. And there is no vaccination against the feeling of being overwhelmed to the max.

1 year pandemic, 1 year homeoffice for many - how are you doing?

Chia seeds, maca roots and goji berries are said to be especially healthy and are a few of the so-called superfoods. They are natural foods that contain a lot of vitamins, minerals and secondary plant substances. Generally, there is nothing wrong with consuming these superfoods. However, Professor Diehm also notes that the superfood trend is a mixture of great marketing, nutrition habits of indigenous people and mystic. With a critical look at the individual superfoods he comments: For most of these excellent marketed trend foods there is usually a local alternative that contains no pollutants, is harvested close by and therefore leaves a smaller CO2-footprint due to the short transport route. So - it doesn’t always have to be exotic.

21/03/2021

A good night’s sleep is important for our health. Only healthy sleep regenerates our body and gives it enough energy to perform. Bad sleep increases the risk for psychosomatic diseases such as depression and anxiety. It is also a main risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and obesity. If you’re overtired, you make more mistakes in your job and are prone to have more accidents.
Bad sleep not only impacts our mental and physical health but also our immune system.

We hope you slept good last night and are ready to start into the day!

Why is being active so important?
Activity supports the blood flow, trains the cardiovascular system, gets the metabolism going and thus burns calories. Weakened muscles get activated and stiff, painful joints are mobilizied. Therefore, activity is the best medicine for many of the most common diseases - and the best thing: it brightens your mood! ☀️

Echocardiography - the ultrasound of the heart - is the most important part of any cardiological exam and is nowadays irreplaceable in interventional cardiology.
The exam has no risks. Simple, quick, gentle and without radiation, the doctor can determine the following:

💛 performance (pump volume) of the heart
💛 size of the individual heart cavities
💛 function of all four heart valves
💛 the main vessels to the heart and from the heart

At Max Grundig Clinic, our head physician of cardiology Dr. Timo Paulus regularly performs echocardiographies, especially as part of the check-up.

09/03/2021

Everyone is talking about Covid-19 - it seems like there is no other topic in the media or even in conversations with one another. That is very understandable, as the virus presents a global challenge. On the other hand, however, it is very dangerous - people avoid going to the doctor - despite symptoms - because they’re afraid of an infection. They postpone their doctor visit because they think doctors have “more important things to do”.
According to studies, the numbers of cancer diagnoses and heart attacks have reduced significantly during the pandemic - however, there weren’t less people affected or less deaths from it. It just means that people went to the doctors less than before - despite existing symptoms. Especially with diseases where every minute counts and where prevention is of greatest importance you should not hesitate to consult a doctor.
Therefore, Professor Dr. Diehm recommends: The pandemic doesn’t change anything about the fact that you can get sick. Cancer, heart attacks, strokes or all the other serious diseases have not lost their terror. Not treating it would be collateral damage of the pandemic. If you have symptoms, please consult your doctor right away - and don’t forget about the importance of prevention.

31/01/2021

There are hardly any topics as frequently discussed as the corona vaccination right now. However, especially hospital employees and doctors seem to be sceptical about the vaccination. Professor Diehm took a closer look at this topic in one of his recent articles.

He thinks it’s due to a combination of reasons, lifestyles and attitudes that contribute to a high refusal rate. For one, it is the frustration with the words of the politicians, lacking precautions taken over the summer in preparation for the next wave and a high discrepancy between media reports and reality. The quick approval of the vaccines, the general low acceptance of vaccinations within the “generation globuli” as well as the personal risk assessment of each individual contribute to the fact that hospital employees often deny the vaccine for themselves.

However, Professor Diehm thinks compulsory vaccination is the wrong way to take - especially now we need competent and experienced personnel. It is dreadful to imagine experienced personnel leaving due to fear of compulsory vaccination.

24/01/2021

Trace elements are chemical elements that can be found in our bodies in very little amounts - however, they are essential for survival. They regulate blood formation and transport of oxygen (iron), they are important for our metabolism and nervous system (iodine), strengthen our immune system (selenium) as well as our bones (zinc). They also play a decisive role in the regulation of our blood sugar (chromium) and energy production (zinc).

Especially in the cold season, marketers want us to believe that we can only get these essential trace elements with supplements - often in combination with vitamins and minerals. Professor Diehms warns against this. A healthy adult with a balanced and varied nutrition will get these trace elements without any supplements. In many cases, these supplements will do more damage than good.

A balanced, healthy nutrition is the best medicine in this case!

The World Health Organization has just told us that adults need at least 21 minutes of physical activity each day. 25% of the adult population do not meet the minimum, while there could be 4 - 5 million less deaths each year without this crucial lack of physical activity.

While the lockdown phase makes it more difficult to exercise you can use this time to figure out which sports is right for you. Dr. Christian Graz, our head physician of Psychosomatics, has looked at different sports and their health benefits.

We’ll introduce one activity and its health benefits each Saturday now - maybe there is something for you, or maybe you have already found your favorite sport?

Why is activity a central element for one’s wellbeing and health, even in winter?

❄️ Physical activity burns calories - the type of activity doesn’t matter. Running, walking, stairs, housework or stretching - everything is possible. Sports is of course the silver bullet - besides the burning of calories it also helps with motor skills, endurance, coordination, flexibility, strength and speed.

❄️ Physical activity works against the malfunction of the blood vessels due to lipids after a fatty meal, and the arteries are in better shape after the activity than before the meal.

❄️ Jogging or fast walking is an excellent anti-aging factor - it keeps you fit up to old age!

❄️ According to a study, women after menopause who are active on a regular basis have only half the risk to get a cold compared to women who aren’t active at all. Generally speaking - training, especially in fresh air, protects from respiratory infections.

So, dress warm, and get active in the winter sun! We wish you a wonderful Sunday!

09/01/2021

When the days are short and the nights are long, our metabolism and our mind also adapts to winter. Everything seems to require a little more effort, and the energy needed to be active is lacking.

Therefore, it is especially in winter so much more important to overcome your weaker self and to stay active. Tomorrow we’ll explain why it is essential in winter to be active - for your wellbeing and your health.

What are you doing today to stay active?

05/01/2021

It is one of the hot topics for mankind: How can you grow old - happily and healthy? Especially now, at the beginning of this year that starts with a few difficult months, we’re looking for answers. Professor Diehm has further looked into this questions to get answers.
Dan Buettner, award-winning author, went on a study trip in 2005 to find a system behind the experience that people in some countries tend to live longer. He called the areas where people reached a high age in good health “blue zones”. Part of the blue zones are now the island of Okinawa in Japan, the Greek island Ikaria, Loma Linda in California, Ogliastra in Sardinia and the peninsula Nicoya in Costa Rica. While these regions all have their own uniqueness, they have a few things in common: Vegan cuisine, nuts and beans, fish, little sugar and salt, good sleep and lots of activity - just to name a few.
