Update from the field! Our partnership project, Maji Bora, is advancing water security and sustainability in hashtag . 💧

The Maji Bora project installs and rehabilitates hundreds of boreholes, bringing sustainable water solutions to local communities. As we move closer to the Gold Standard registration process, FirstClimate and Griot Creative (Griot Consulting) are working hard to ensure that the project is running smoothly.

First Climate expert Ipek Topuz and Griot Ltd expert Hywel George were on site for:
🗣️ Stakeholder meetings to align on community needs and goals.
✅ Technical checks to ensure the boreholes meet high-quality standards.
👩‍🔬 Assessments of related WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) practices, critical to enhancing health and well-being.

Cultivating corn 🌽 and cutting carbon emissions! 📉

The Western Kenya Soil Carbon Project is a prime example of how carbon finance is enhancing farmers soil quality and agricultural practices in ! 🌾 Sustainable agricultural land management and diverse low-emissions practices are continuing to improve the livelihood of local farmers.

We had a great experience in the 💚 of Zurich!

2024’s Zurich City Triathlon is over, but the memories remain! 🤩

The day was full of action, excitement, and a sense of accomplishment. First Climate's six triathletes cheered each other and gave their best -- whether cutting through the waters of Lake Zurich, straddling a racing bike, or sprinting in running shoes. 🏊‍♀️ 🚵‍♂️ 🏃‍♂️

“It’s time we take a more holistic look at corporate climate action and scope 3 emissions.” -Mike Hatert, COO FFirst Climate
The Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) released a statement last week announcing that it will publish new guidelines for the use of environmental attribute certificates for scope 3 abatement in July. While not yet clarifying the role of carbon credits in SBTi’s concept of corporate climate action, this statement triggered a debate on this topic. 📣

How can companies in get the money moving to meet the 1.5° C target? 🤔

The climate finance gap is still a major problem that we need to address to effectively tackle the climate crisis.

In the latest CDP Europe Report 2023 “Get the money moving: Meeting the European corporate transition challenge,” European companies are encouraged to use sustainability reporting and disclosed environmental data to mobilize capital and redirect financial flows to sustainable investments and decarbonization measures.

We’re tackling overgrazing in Colombia with Carbono Local+! 👩‍🌾
First ClimateFirst Climate and Carbon Local+ are partnering on a project to support regenerative livestock practices to restore soil quality and enhance the carbon sequestration capacity of degraded agricultural land in Colombia.

As an investor and technical consultant for the project, First Climate will provide advice for the certification process under Verra. First Climate will also be the exclusive partner for marketing the project’s carbon credits.

Some project highlights:

👩‍🌾 More than 60 participating farmers distributed in 15 Colombian departments in 5 ecoregions
🐮 Ranches and farms of all sizes implementing rotational grazing
🌎 Covers 14,700 hectare of agricultural land in Colombia to date
🌱 Expects to annually remove up to 2.5 t of CO2e per hectare
🐦 Increasing micro and macro biodiversity: from beetles and fungi to birds and mammals
🍯 Promotion of other non-woody forest products, such as honey and food
🖇 Innovative dMRV tools tailored to the project
❌ Commitment to no deforestation, chemicals, or fertilizers

First Climate and Carbono Local+ are cooperating on an innovative nature-based carbon removal project to promote rotational grazing.

📣 Big news for companies on their climate journey: The Science Based Targets initiative released a statement on the role of environmental attribute certificates for scope 3 emissions abatement.

💡 “While recognizing that there is an ongoing healthy debate on the subject matter, SBTi recognizes that, when properly supported by policies, standards and procedures based on scientific evidence, the use of environmental attribute certificates for abatement purposes on Scope 3 emissions could function as an additional tool to tackle climate change.”

Scope 3 emissions are still a major challenge for many companies to address. 👉 Last year, CDP found that 92% of emissions disclosed by European companies in 2022 were scope 3, but that only 37% of these are being addressed with current decarbonization measures.

First Climate welcomes this statement and look forward to the first draft of rules by July 2024.

In January 2024 the SBTi announced that work to revise its flagship Corporate Net-Zero Standard was a priority for 2024, and that this revision would include additional guidance on tackling scope 3 emissions.

Pedal Power made in 🚲

First Climate is supporting Wahu Mobility in scaling up green mobility options in Ghana!

Wahu Mobility plans to build and distribute over 100,000 eBikes for commuters and freelance delivery workers in Accra, Ghana. 🚵‍♀️

This climate project aims to reduce transportation-related emissions and build infrastructure with solar-powered charging stations, digital navigation tools, and an integrated mobile phone platform.

First Climate supports the Wahu project in getting the required governmental authorization to implement the low-carbon project, in accordance with a mandate from the Swiss Klik Foundation.

🎉 Wieland Group has secured a long-term solar Power Purchase Agreement (PPA)!

Wieland Group and Vattenfall have agreed to a long-term electricity supply contract. This PPA secures the Wieland Group access to the environmentally friendly solar power generated by the 46 MW plant for ten years. ☀

This is another important step for Wieland’s decarbonization journey, and the First ClimateRenewables Team is proud to have supported Wieland on the successful conclusion of the PPA.
