Why did I choose Traditional Japanese Reiki?
Because when I first approached energy work, I immediately understood that there are many possible paths — and for me, knowing what I was doing and how to understand whether I was working effectively was essential.

Traditional Japanese Reiki gave me the tools to perceive energetic information, interpret it, and understand whether the direction I was taking with each person was the right one. I consider the ethical aspect fundamental, especially in holistic disciplines that can seem vague or unclear if not explored with proper care.

For this reason, Traditional Japanese Reiki has become not only a practice for inner work, but also a way to stay by people’s side, offering the right support at different moments of their lives. It’s a practice rooted in clarity, groundedness, and a shared intention that connects the spiritual dimension with the more tangible aspects of therapeutic work.

It can also be used alongside conventional medical treatments, as a complementary practice that supports overall well-being.

Are you curious about what we could work on together? Send me a DM.

Sensei Mikao Usui was born on August 15, 1865, in Taniai-mura, the area now known as the village of Miyama-chō in the Yamagata district of Gifu Prefecture. He came from a family belonging to the Chiba clan, descendants of the samurai Tsunetane Chiba. His family practiced Tendai Buddhism, a tradition in which Usui was educated from a young age.

From early childhood, he showed a strong inclination toward study and spiritual exploration. Information about his professional life is incomplete and, in some cases, not fully documented, but it is known that he had an excellent education and held respected positions within Meiji–Taishō era Japanese society. He worked in administrative and commercial fields, had experience in journalism, and carried out activities related to Shinto. Some older biographical sources attribute high-ranking governmental roles to him, but modern research does not confirm these claims.

Japan at that time was deeply influenced by Shugendō, an ancient shamanic-ascetic tradition linked to the veneration of sacred mountains, as well as by a rich landscape of Buddhist and Shinto practices.
The Yamabushi, mountain ascetics, were regarded as intermediaries between the human world and the spirit world, practicing healing and ritual arts.
The Miko, female ritual practitioners, served as mediums during religious ceremonies.
There is no evidence that Mikao Usui was a Yamabushi, but his strong connection with Mount Kurama—a sacred site of Shugendō—suggests a possible cultural or spiritual affinity.

In 1922, after his spiritual experience on Mount Kurama, Usui founded the Usui Reiki Ryōhō Gakkai in Tokyo.
Contrary to what is often claimed in the West, the association was not popular or open to everyone: it was composed of members of Japan’s cultural, military, and economic elite. Fees were high and admission selective. The discipline was studied with great rigor: students were required to attend gatherings and seminars consistently, following a path demanding both in practice and ethics. This exclusive and discreet structure—careful not to conflict with authorities—allowed Reiki to survive even after Usui’s death from a stroke in 1926.

After him, the method was carried forward primarily by Chujiro Hayashi, one of his most esteemed students.
It was thanks to Hayashi that, through his student Hawayo Takata Reiki reached Hawaii, the United States, and eventually the entire Western world, where it evolved and gave rise to the various modern schools and lineages.

Traditional Japanese Reiki: The Origins
I decided to dedicate some space to talk to you about how Reiki came to be known and spread, and how often our conditioning — derived from colonial ideologies — has influenced even the way we conceive of Reiki today. Reiki did not emerge from nothing, from sudden enlightenment or a flash of genius. It was born out of a difficult yet necessary process, shaped by the conditions present in Japan at that time.
World War I had ended, and the 1920s in Japan were a unique period, marked by the growing influence of Western ways of thinking that affected not only Japanese customs and daily life but also methods of healing. Since 1868, spiritual and energetic practices had been banned and declared illegal by Emperor Meiji.
Sensei Mikao Usui understood how to ensure that his practice, which he called Reiki, could circumvent the restrictive regulations of the time. He founded his association, Gakkai — later referred to as a school — where, starting in 1922, he began training the first Shihan (Reiki teachers) and treating people in a clinic-like setting.
Reiki, therefore, did not originate from an isolated spiritual retreat or as a divine revelation. Rather, Reiki was born out of necessity — as an interstitial space within the folds of reality that, at that time, allowed Reiki to begin to exist as “Shin Shin Kaizen Usui Reiki Ryōhō”, meaning “Usui’s Reiki Method for the Improvement of Mind and Body.”
