❄️ THE FACES OF WINTER ❄️
Part 3

In the last days of my period, when the blood has already become scanty, and brown or rust-coloured, the wise old weaver of dreams starts making space for feeling the maiden.
The transformation not yet complete, she is still enjoying the comfort of her cave, but can already feel energy & inspiration flow back into her being.
Her body is slowly stretching itself awake and her mind is already full of ideas of what to become in the next cycle.

The transition from crone to maiden feels as hopeful as the first warmth of spring after a cold winter, or like a new dawn after a long night. The Fool is about to start a new journey, with the promise of joy at the horizon. Another chance to reinvent ourselves.

During this phase, I love starting to drink mineral-rich & deeply nourishing herbs in order to help my body regather its strength. Nettle especially calls me for that purpose, as it's high in iron (which I've lost a bunch due to my bleed) and has both the qualities of the nourishing grandmother & the fierce warrior that starts a new journey.

How do you experience the end of your period? Let me know in the comments!

And scroll back a little to find Part 1 & 2 of this little exploration of the inner winter's different faces!

🌲 YEW MEDICINE 🌲

Over the last year, I've fallen deeply in love with yew. And more & more, I realize how much I need her medicine.

Yew is surrounded by more myth & legend than what can be told. Ancient Greeks regarded her as a guardian of the soul and she was planted on graveyards all over Europe. Some say that she is the world tree Yggdrasil that Norse mythology centers around. Yew wood was believed to be magical and often used to carve ritual items or weapons.

I find her to be the mastress of death & rebirth, the one guiding our last journey into our undoing (literal or metaphorical), the one that takes our physical form away and helps us understand ourselves beyond it, reshapes it if so we desire and sends us back on our path renewed. Her bright red berries remind me of menstrual blood and represent the same process.
Its as if she knows who we are meant to become and helps us shed the layers that keep us away from ourselves.

All parts of yew are poisonous. At least, that's what most books state, but I've found it to be untrue. The flesh of the berries is slimey, sweet & delicious, and not poisonous if eaten WITHOUT the seeds. Yew seeds and needles can indeed be deadly.
Don't get me wrong. This is by no means a recommendation to go and eat yew berries. I'm just trying to point out that she is an oftentimes misunderstood & misjudged creature.

Yew isnt a bringer of death & darkness. She's peaceful like winter nights & embraces us like the fertile black soil embraces her roots. She shelters us away from the world when we need time & space to transform.
Did you know that when her outer trunk dies after decades, she grows a new, inner trunk to care for her leaves & branches? That's how caring she is.

I love to go to a nearby cemetery and caress those soft needles, or curl up cuddling her trunk...

Have you met the spirit of yew yet?
What does she mean to you?

❄️ THE FACES OF WINTER ❄️

Part 2

In Part 1 of this exploration of my inner seasons' facettes I've written about how the edgy energy of the autumn priestess flows into the first few days of my bleed.

And then, finally, the wise old crone shows up in all her cristalline silence. For a few days, when cramps & physical discomfort have vanished along with the weight of the last cycle, I enter a state of profound stillness. All I then crave is warmth, and quietude, and time to dream.
The wise woman inside me sends deep roots into the earth and anchors me in my belonging to the web of life. She weaves threads to other realms and stands in the subtle strength of all her ancestors. She knows what she knows, and worries little. Instead, she trusts that the next cycle, just like the last, will bring gold, as it will bring shadows.
She is the gatekeeper that knows exactly when to open the doors again.

It's cocooning & recharging time. I might avoid noise and people and stimulation. Sleeping, reading, drawing & knitting become much more important than socializing. My blood flows as peacefully as my breath.
Earthy teas & mushroom soups & dream-enhancing, consciousness shifting plants will help me sink into my own presence, and feel wrapped in the love of the earth.

How do you experience the middle of your bleed? Have you encountered the wise old crone there?

🌿 MINT & EVERGREEN CHEST BALM 🌿

December seems to be the month where I feel all the weight I've collected over the year weigh especially heavy on my shoulders. Where the knot of unprocessed emotions in my chest and the clutter in my mind reach an overwhelming level, one where all I yearn for is that feeling of spaciousness that seems so hard to find.

Aromatic mints & evergreen needles are masters of spaciousness. Connected to the air element & the windy north, they open the chest wide, deepen the breath & allow stuck grief to dissolve. Like a breeze of fresh, cold winter air they sweep through a clouded mind and clear the fog. Plus, they are excellent friends when colds & coughs create extra tension in the heart & lung area!

I've come up with a little recipe that blends soothing, cooling mint & evergreen aromas into a chest balm in order to bring relief to all that messy clutter that keeps me from emptying myself and becoming a vessel for life to flow through again!
It smells heavenly and is easy to make, so I wanted to share it with you:

🌿 Peppermint infused oil (I use almond oil)
🌿 Evergreen infused oil (fir, spruce, pine or juniper )
🌿 Shea butter
🌿 Bees wax or Cacao butter
🌿 Essential oils of choice, such as peppermint, evergreens, cajeput, tea tree or eucalyptus

If you don't already have infused oils, you can simply infuse them with peppermint & evergreen needles and/or resins with the double boiler method.
Then, add bees wax or cacao butter until melted, strain if needed and let cool down a little before adding shea butter and essential oils. Fill into jars and let cool completely in the fridge.
Keeping your chest balm in the fridge will enhance the cooling, soothing effect of the herbs!

Gently rub on your chest whenever you experience chest pain, a cold or a tight heart. Enjoy the sensation of expansion and breathe deeply... Air is medicine!!

Winter love & yuletide blessings ❄️🕯️🌿

❄️ THE FACES OF WINTER ❄️

Part 1

You've probably heard about the inner seasons of the menstrual cycle, right? And if only it were as simple as spring, summer, autumn & winter. But no.
I've been reflecting on the different facettes of each of my inner seasons & archetypes, and would love to share my insights with you to see if they resonate, and learn about your experience. It feels as if the triple goddess would reside in each of my seasons. Fractals within fractals, in a way.

Inner winter, or the "crone" or "wise woman" archetype, is generally a huge relief for me after the edgy autumn energy, being all about arriving home into myself & with that, sensing a profound connection to spirit realms & other worlds.

But here's what I discovered: My winter has 3 different phases, the first of them resembling the twisted vibes of the autumn priestess a lot.
It sometimes happens that with the first drop of blood, all the tension built up during the cycle just falls from my shoulders.
But often, the energy of autumn spills over into my first one or two days of bleeding, and while I'm already moving towards the peaceful, grounded wise old woman, I still feel the destructive, cathartic Kali-like forces that help me to really release & cut loose.

I might be in pain. I might be cynical. I might just feel exhausted.
And I am definitely inbetween worlds, entering a portal to my own magic & connectedness.
I experience this as the most "feminine" or "yin" moment of my cycle, where water & earth collide, where the chaos priestess turns into the old grandmother, and where I'm entirely raw, open & vulnerable.

Not easy to navigate, but so fertile. So precious.
Earthy nervines, adaotogens & sweet nourishing herbs help me through this transition, as well as making art, grieving for what I've lost, and surrendering myself completely to the three spinners down by the well of fate.

How do you feel at the beginning of your inner winter / bleeding time?
Have you observed patterns within your cycle's seasons yet?

🌲 THE END OF THE WORLD 🌲

Sometimes I feel like I'm walking straight into the end of the world. Apocalypse around the next corner, unavoidable. Doesn't matter if that is because of a sick society drowning itself in the terror of separateness, or because of the wars that, from time to time, rage inside my own chest.
It just feels like everything is doomed.
I want to fall into a black hole of nothingness, curl up like a cat & wrap myself in soothing darkness, and silence.

What gets me through these moments?
Plants.
Cups of tea.
Candles.
Poems.
Talking to trees.
Breathing.
Realizing that I have a body.
Realizing that, no matter what, my inner landscape is vast & wide & wonderful.

And then all of a sudden, I'm around that scary corner, still breathing.
Not the end of the world. World is still there, still holding as much beauty as it holds terror. If not more.

I wonder, what gets you through moments of crisis & collapse? What are your most treasured resources for apocalyptic & doomed days?

☕ TEABLEND TUESDAY: SUN-KISSED WINTER BLUES SOOTHING ☕

Sooo, here it is, the new format I've been dreaming up for a while now, and that you helped me create by voting in my stories for the teablend you'd most feel supported by!
I must say that I wasn't surprised when the results clearly indicated that some uplifting, anti-depressive winter blues remedy is needed...
So here's what I mixed together :

☀️ 2 parts OATSTRAW
☀️ 1 part ST. JOHNSWORT
☀️ 1 part CALENDULA
☀️ 1 part LEMONGRASS
☀️ 1 part TULSI
☀️ 1/3 part SWEET ORANGE PEEL
☀️ 1/3 part GINGER

Mix all ingredients together and steep in hot water for 15 minutes.

Optionally, add
☀️ HONEY for sweetness
☀️ VANILLA for an extra cozy, pleasureful heart & womb embrace
☀️ an EVERGREEN branch like spruce or pine for the forest's uplifting clarity

Read on if you want to explore the ingredients a little more!
👇🏻👇🏻
Oatstraw is a wonderful adaptogen, nervine & restorative full of vitamins & minerals that nourish every cell. It holds the spirit of lightness, eases a weary heart and feels like a motherly embrace.
St. Johnswort is one of the best anti-depressive remedies I know. It is a nervine full of late summers fierce sun powers, that helps especially when we lack sunlight & vitamin D during the dark months.
Calendula is joy. Resilient & enduring, she blooms in the scarcest conditions, and her uplifting sprinkles of colour can be found all the way into winter!
Lemongrass brings a sense of freshness, ease & vitality, clearing a worried mind while singing of summer days filled with sparkly lemonade...
Tulsi is another favorite adaptogen with an incredibly special taste that personally just reminds me of all that is sacred in & around me. It is both uplifting & nervous system soothing.
Sweet orange peel just tastes like pleasure, joy & sweet, child-like innocence. It provides immune-enhancing vitamins and reminds me not to take everything so serious.
Ginger spreads it's warming fire through all the body, waking us even from the deepest slumber, giving us inspiration & strength to get back on our feet.

☀️☀️☀️

Save this post for heavy & dark days, and let me know how you liked the tea!

🍁 THAT TIME OF YEAR 🍁

Some autumn poetry to kiss the heavyness of the gloomy days away...

" That time of year thou mayst in me behold
When yellow leaves, or none, or few, do hang
Upon those boughs which shake against the cold,
Bare ruin'd choirs, where late the sweet birds sang.
In me thou see'st the twilight of such day
As after sunset fadeth in the west,
Which by and by black night doth take away,
Death's second self, that seals up all in rest.
In me thou see'st the glowing of such fire
That on the ashes of his youth doth lie,
As the death-bed whereon it must expire,
Consum'd with that which it was nourish'd by.
This thou perceiv'st, which makes thy love more strong,
To love that well which thou must leave ere long. "

🍄 THE WONDERS OF AMANITA 🍄

I want to let you know of the newly found, tenderly unfolding love story I have with this most mystical forest creature!
She has been calling me for many years. But here's the thing about my relationship with plant spirits: When I hear them call, I don't jump up and run after them. I smile, and I wait. Until they tell me that it's time.

It wasn't until some weeks ago that she made it absolutely clear that our time had come.
I am beyond humbled to be allowed to approach such a powerful spirit, and amazed at the ways she chooses to tickle me into my own initiation with her.

Amanita muscaria, probably one of the most commonly known and most commonly misjudged mushrooms there is, weaves her mycelium through the legends & tales of many different cultures.
From northern myths surrounding the godfather Odin, Siberian shamanism and "Soma", the life elixir of the Indian gods, all the way down to ancient Greece & Rome and their temples of pleasure - Amanita has always been worshipped & used as a trance-inducing, prophetic and sensually stimulating medicine.

I don't want to speak too much about properties, preparations & dosages yet, as I am still discovering this relationship. But what I can say from my experience so far, is that she is incredibly tender, sweet-hearted & caring. And I'm so excited to see what else lays behind this opening door...

Have you connected with Amanita yet? How does she feel?

🌳 ANCIENT SKILLS AS WAYS OF REVOLUTION🌳

It's been quiet here the last days, because I took some time away from society & its increasing madness, and instead focused on remembering and re~embodying long-lost archetypes of earth guardianship.

May we find the roles fashioned for us in this revolution of reconnection. Mine certainly lays in the reverence of ancient traditions & rituals, in learning & sharing skills that remind us of how utterly wild, magnificent & interconnected we are.

In a society that understands itself as a system separate from nature, forest walks are revolutionary.
Talking to trees is revolutionary.
Gardening is revolutionary.
Plant medicine is revolutionary.
Seasonal living is revolutionary.
Cooking over the fire is revolutionary.
Carpentry, pottery & blacksmithery are revolutionary.
Archery is revolutionary.
Tanning leather is revolutionary.
Weaving is revolutionary.
Studying the stars is revolutionary.
Communicating with spirits is revolutionary.
Dreaming is revolutionary.
Ritual is revolutionary.

May we not allow the ways of our ancestors to be forgotten.

Which ancient skills & crafts do you feel called to learn?

🕸 THE THREAD THAT HOLDS ME TOGETHER 🕸

In times of chaos, change, intensity or dispersion, it can be hard to find something steady & constant inside. Maybe that's part of why I love working with wool & yarn so much, be it knitting, crochet, sewing, weaving, embroidering, spinning...
It becomes the manifest symbol of a golden thread that calmly, steadily weaves through all the chaos. When everything crumbles around & inside me, I still have that thread which, in a way, I can hold onto, and in another way, holds me together as it slides through my fingers with lessons of patience & perseverance.

So that spoken, it is no surprise that I have just started my biggest crochet project so far - a huge patchwork blanket in earthy colours. I can already imagine it laying in front of the fire place in my future home, or being wrapped around my children one day...
So whatever happens this winter, I have my threads to weave alongside dreams & stories.

Btw, i carved that beautiful birch wood crochet hook recently under the instruction of my dear chou !

Is there a craft or practice that helps hold you together?

She Who Howls

She is that free-roaming, wolf-spirited wildness inside you. The untameable, untraceable one. She is your longing to disappear into the shadows of ancient trees, to run along rivershores and soak up the earth with your bare feet. She is the naked, unbound soul home to untouched places. She is the silence of a moonlit night and the hope-coloured howl that breaks the silence. She is the body, blood and voice of the earth, the one that speaks up for all that is ancient, true and pure. She is the one who remembers and reminds, the one found deep beneath the skin, or in the stillness between breaths. She is the mysterious, unseen force that turns the wheel, the rhythmic pattern behind all that pulsates with life. She is the wise wisdom-keeper and weaver of dreams. The plant whisperer and womb healer. The soothing hand on your wounds. Daughter of earth and moon, she was born long before time and has returned to see you rise. . No matter what body you are born into, she lives inside you, far beyond gender or identity. And that liberating, truth-speaking, ancestor-invoking howl is her medicine. . "She who howls" is a project of guidance through the realms of feminine empowerment, remembrance, resilience and reconnection. It strives to encourage the self-healing capacities of body and soul and offers a series of medicines lovingly crafted to re-enliven old tales of deep earth reverence. Medicines for our wild, rhythmic nature. . Along with those remedies, private consultations around holistic herbal health-care for women will soon be available, including natural treatments for p***y and pelvis, cycle awareness, menstrual healing rituals, womb cleansing practices, and support around fertility, sexuality, pleasure and self-care.
