Breathing is the only tangible thing that we can control in real time, and it also happens to be a marker of our emotions and how we feel at any given point.

In yoga, the breath is seen as a bridge between the gross and subtle aspects of a person. Yoga recognizes that the quality of one's breath reflects their mental and emotional state. Shallow, rapid breaths are associated with stress and anxiety, while slow, deep breaths are linked to relaxation and calm. Yoga seeks to transform unhealthy breathing patterns into healthier ones through practice. The breath is often used as an anchor in meditation. Focusing on the breath helps quiet the mind and brings about a state of meditation. Breath awareness meditation, known as "anapanasati," is a common meditation practice in yoga.

Overall, the concept of breath in yoga is not just about physical respiration but extends to the idea of life energy and its profound influence on physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of one's being. Yoga and weight loss? Is that a thing? Purists would disregard connoting yoga with weight loss, whereas modern yogis will swear by it.

So what’s the big deal?
For years, yoga has been considered to a be a practice of self-inquiry and self/realisation. The asanas (poses) that we do are merely to get acquainted with the body and to regulate its functions, and make it fit for contemplative practices of meditation and mindfulness.

On the other hand, visual culture has made yoga seem like a mere physical activity which gets associated with weight loss. That perception might be short sighted, but one cannot deny the plethora of advantages (read: stress reduction, regulated digestion etc.) yoga asanas bring to the table that could eventually lead to weight loss.

So all in all, it depends on what one take out of it.

Who we are

We are a community of yoga teachers from the Eastern tradition — where yoga happens both on and off the mat.

The foundational yoga scriptures of yoga show there are many paths toward physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing. Western yoga has so far focused on the physical path, leaving the other pathways less travelled.

Asanaguru uses technology to make those pathways, more accessible to students in the West.
