Things I would tell my 6-year-old self:
✨️ You’re beautiful with your dark, almond eyes and stick-straight black hair. You don’t have to be white to be beautiful.
✨️ The food in your lunchbox isn’t weird.
✨️ Keep speaking Cantonese with your parents; language is a way to stay connected with them and your roots.
✨️ Books will be some of your best friends, especially when you’re feeling lonely.
✨️ Mum and dad are doing the best they can. They’re young and trying to figure out life for the first time, with two young kids in tow, in a foreign country where the majority of people don’t look like us or talk like us.
✨️ In the moments when you feel abandoned, know that it was never about you. People we love can make mistakes and it's not a reflection of how much or how little they love you.
✨️ Without a doubt, you are loved.
In the latest Full of It podcast episode, and I share our origin stories - what it was like for each of us growing up, how our families and experiences shaped us, and what we’re unlearning as adults. Listen to the episode; link in the bio! 🎧
